At this point they've kind of gone "Eh, we're old, and a receeding mohawk is a true faux pas, let's just wear hipster glasses and read Chuck Palaniuk" my entire education was apparently based on david bowie's kooks (I was homeschooled by my crazy dad) they're definantly relatively normal looking, but in an odd way. As for their close mindedness, not really, they just myanthropic and bitter, and enjoy mocking everything they can...when my dad was younger people used to say he looked like billy idol, he had his hair bleached nearly white, and my mom had a buzzcut... as a baby I was dressed like a Jim Jerimush charechter, and honestly they're pretty cool, good about me going to shows, and fun to talk to about music, art, and books etc. If my dad had been a few years younger the ironic thing is he would have been goth, he's very into halloween, and actually runs a website (www.olantern.com) which sells unusal halloween goods, he also collects vintage/antique halloween decorations. Basically he's kind of awesome... My Mom's a weaver, and obsessed with skeletons, as is her father (who's an artist)

Thanks for the compliments, guys (and gals). I didn't get that conclusion of mine from the top of my head. I know it feels familiar, but I can't quite remember where I read it. It could have been Dr. Cornelius West on black people and conformity, but I made the connection to goth on my own. Whoopee.

My grand parents on my fathers side pretty much had heart attacks when they came for a surprise visit and I was dressed in my usual attire. They live far away so i don't see them often, so when I go visit them I dress like a totally different person. My grandmother later that evening bought me a variety of tan and hot pink clothes and insisted I wear them at all times. I now only wear them when I go visit to keep her happy. I'm not African but my little brother is half sudanese and my stepdad is from sudan.

Personally I think if you have very pale skin or very dark skin you look best in Gothic dress.

i know what you mean, when i go to my granparents on my dads side im not allowed to dress in anything black and i have to wear my hair down to hide the fact that i have an under cut. saying that last month i got away with wearing black as my grandpa had just died but other wise i have a pair of jeans and a couple of tops that i hide away just to wear at theirs.

i to be honest think its nice if you wear the gothic look but once in a while maybe wear a white t-shirt like i do it just shows that you do have more then black

Lol most of the clothes I have are black and so it shall stay for as long as it pleases me. Thank lord, my grandparents do not criticize the way i look too much (well truth is i also don't have any piercings 'cept on my ears, and my hair's plain and black). My mom's parents are especially sweet, i love them.

Despite what my dad would suggest I wear at family and church functions- I would just wear what I normally wear. For some reason he was afraid that the church ladies wouldn't like me if I dressed the way I do. He still advises me to take out my piercings. I tell him to shove it and that the church ladies LOVE me. I never cared what my extended family thought of how I dress. I figured- this is me. They can either take it or leave it.

I used to go to church, the pastor didn't like the way I dressed. He gave me a teen self-help book and put a sticky note on the page about the way you dress, it was rather funny. The kids in the youth group didn't like me very much either.

Nicola - I respect you for being true to what you are despite influences by friends/background.

However I have not met many people who were interested in cemeteries or scary movies from a very young age. I have personally come to be darker as I saw more of life, and understood that I can question social expectations and religion, and experienced the hypocritical and backstabbing human nature.

maggot - you have a point in the story having elements of an "it's ok to be gothy and different" experience that phoney seemingly misunderstood kids always rant about, although I am almost certain that I believe it's true. I don't think you're racist, either.

It really comes down to one's definition of goth.

As for the "goth closet", it has been slightly annoying with my family, who are very Christian and conservative. But I never tried to fit in with friends or school or anything like that. When high school started and all the "cliques" formed, I just wore what I liked and said what I thought and made friends with many interesting "outcasts."

Heh, many aspects of your story Nicola remind me of myself. I love graveyards as well. I visit them any chance I get too, actually, theres one a few blocks away from my home. And I live in Harlem, a part of New York City. I'm 14 years old in 9th grade. Growing up listening to metal and dark music was hard through 7th grade and 8th was hard until I met my best friend this year. Matthew, he thought just like me, hes like my brother, I love him, and we're into the same music. Nobody ever understood me and I finally found someone who does. I had a low self esteem but when I met him, he was just like, my role model. Now I dress in strange exotic ways(not like a stereotypical goth poseur, just weird, either like a strange rainbow outfit or weird hats and such xD) and have strange spasms in the middle of class and act like the insane person I am inside. xD Isn't it such a great thing when one can truly express the way they feel?
