Question : Why??

I have been thinking on this question for a while but, I cannot seem to come to an answer. I don't know if it's just me or if anyone else feels this way. Ok...
What exactly is the point of dressing in all black and etc?

I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing but, people judge thats a known fact. Why should we put ourselves basically, in the line of fire?

Is their a main point in dressing that way?

Honestly, I'm just curious but, it's funny I never really questioned it up until I thought on it.

Can anyone give their thoughts?

I wear dark colors so grease don't show. Also I think I look silly in anything else.....

I like grey, it's not all black..lol

I look rediculous in any other colours. If i wear more than 2, i always end up looking like a clown. And i just enjoy the darker aesthetics. Theres also the guilty pleasure of knowing that people who see me are either a little afraid or want to come up and try and convert me. And i enjoy pushy religious types of any religion. Its fun to ask them to prove things. Because they never really can.

I don't really wear all black anymore because I have a white fluffy cat that gets her hair all over my black clothes and well it's a pain in the butt to constantly be removing them. I wear alot of black shirts though. I used to for the longest time wear mostly black or darker colors like blood red, burgandy or grey because I just loved the look. I felt odd wearing like pastel colors or any bright color. It just didn't suit my personality.

I don't think "gothic" people wear black because they feel like they have to. People dress that way because they like the style and they feel comfortable that way.

I would like to share what i feel on this...
Personally, i dress for myself. I agree with wishcat, i find that any light colour makes me feel...odd.
I feel creative when i dress in my lace and velvet.... But i belive there is no other point in dressing in any way unless it is for yourself.

Because it's the easiest thing to do. You can always find black clothing whatever the mainstream fashion of the season is, and there is less chance of a mismatch...I secretly belive that all goths are as lazy as me

My answer, I guess, has many facets. I actually like black. It is flattering, slimming, and doesn't show stains, therefore, it is practical to a mother of 5 (gasp yes I have 5 kids). I also personally believe black has protective properties, but that gets into a more religious type area I generally don't discuss casually. And finally, black just suits my personal style.

I am so used to it, and my friends and coworkers are too, that when I wear anything that isn't black, they ask "why are you so bright today?".

I just don't look right in anything else. I am really going to feel weird wearing loud Hawaiian shirts when I go the islands in May.

I dress like a normie when I am depressed and want to blend into the background of the crowd.

Black goes with everything. (Well, except for brown, but I hate brown so that doesn't really present any problems for me.) Not to say that I never wear colors, but I feel a lot safer with black/white. It's one of the main things that I consider when shopping: if it's black, it'll probably work.

I'm from NY/NJ, and many people up there wear lots of black. I went to an outing last night w/ the family, my whole immediate family was dressed in black. Now, in FL, it's a little bit hot, but it matches w/ everything, like everyone else says, and I like it. I think I have a life-long habit of wearing dark colors in general.
But I will mix it up and wear completely different types of clothes once in a while if I like them. Pink is great, and I can't resist mixing it w/ black, too....

Yes, but you all can honestly say that calling yourself gothic, has not had an affect on your clothing choice.

I understand that calling yourself gothic, doesn't necessarily mean all black clothing but, you can say that it dosen't have any affect what you wear.

I never really labled myself. I always just wore and did what I liked. I personally hate lableing people. If people believe I am goth or whatever they want to to believe, I really don't care. As long as I am happy and comfortable with how I dress, that's all that matters.

I think it means different things to different people, some of the reasons we all do it though, I think is to signal to other's that we're of the same group. It's like a guild affiliation. As for my personal reasons, I dress to shock because it makes me feel happy, and in an odd way safe. My world view tends to the belief that the world is a dark and threatening place, and that my own mind is often a dark and threatening place, so in life when I'm stressed I suppose in a way I "flash my eye spots" like a butterfly, or "puff up" like a puffer fish, I appear my most threatening and disturbing when something is worrying me, the basic psychology is that my hope is to scare off whatever's threatening me. After all what is there to frighten you in the world if you're the scariest fucking thing in it?

Black is popular because people relate the colour black with the macabre. Black is also popular among artists. It's common among goths because it contrasts against the mainstream. There are a lot of reasons why black is popular, but it also depends on the person. I like black because it is more elegant and sophisticated to me, but also because I don't feel as if I am as blended into society as many others are.

I just love black. I've worn as much black as I could since my 2nd year in secondary school... I never labelled myself as anything til a year ago (I took a step back and looked at myself and I was like "hang on, add some makeup and you'd be a proper goth").

I don't like loud colours... I do wear woodland camo trousers quite a lot though. I just like black because it's low-toned, sophisticated, doesn't exaggerate my physique like white does, etc. Military clothes are teh win. Practical, dark, stylish, comfy.

Black just feels natural to me. I typically fail to notice that I wear mostly black, but just take it for granted. I can't imagine myself ever being all up in color, because I'd feel silly and very exposed that way.

It also goes well with anything, except yellow stripes. That makes you look like a bumblebee.

I love black, and everyone wants to be me.

Now, the real question is why do I myself love black?
Well, to that I don't have an answer, but it is irrelevant. At this point, going back to colors would be weird for both me and my friends.

I don't like to wear all black, I have difficulty looking down if I do.
The only black I wear is the occasional band shirt, but otherwise I'm as colourful as a rainbow.

Men in black are very very sexy. I don't think I'd be more distracted by a person than a guy all in black, even if they were naked.

Black just looks and feels good on me. I like not having to think about colours matching (I was always awful at that) - I prefer working with different textures, and black leaves a lot of space for that. Plus all my white and coloured clothes always end up stained and icky.

I wear black for several reasons, the main ones being:

1. It really, really suits me because, maintenant, I've got black hair and my naturally pale (almost white) skin and light blue eyes. Combined with the shape of my body a tight fitting black top and trousers just looks awesome on me.

2. Being a drama student, we're actively being encouraged to wear all black ("base costume") at school by our teachers.

3. I despise pastels (except for light blue) with a passion, and for some reason all you'll get here is either pastel or black (or brown, which doesn't suit me at all).

4. It feels right and goes well with my boots.

Because I am lazy as fuck. Black goes with everything... well most of the time. Seriously though, I am not one to wear a lot of black. You will find me getting about in jeans and a t-shirt, possibly a black skirt and a cream top.

I do dye my hair jet black, because I like the look and the fact is my hair was dark to begin with. I like how it contrasts with my skin and it gives me that more of a oriental look about me. If people ever see me wearing bright colours they would wonder what the hell was wrong with me and ask. "Sarah are you chronically ill?"

Seriously when I was younger I tried too hard, now I don't give a shit.
