I read a book that said that marylin manson and cradle of filth were modern goth bands...What a N00b.
But he did get the classic goth bands surprisingly right compared to the modern ones.

Maybe the author meant they took a goth image, or his intention was to say that they use the asesthic for money... But I didn't read it, so I have no idea what his intention was...

Yeah, the bands take the aesthetics or fashion sense of goth without bringing the musical stylings or subject matter. It's a r.aping of the beautiful world of goth into a marketing ploy. I hate it.

Ok, don't lynch me...In the defense of the "musicians"...I myself draw a lot of my behavior and fashion sense from Goth. But I am fundamentally Punk. And my band is Metal…These are three very separate sub-cultures. Many of my friends are Metal-Heads, but they also play in Punk bands.
It’s possible for the musician to be of one sub-culture but to play something in another. It may seem like selling out, but it’s a matter of making a living. So xyz’s appearance is suddenly linked to the style of music they’re playing.
Am I making any sense?

I fail to see how a persons style of dress should dictate the music they make. Sight and hearing are completely different senses.

A person's dress actually does dictate what style of music they make. Should a glam band not dress androgynously? I can tolerate bands with a mere aesthetic for the look, but when the band starts claiming they're goth, that's when I get pissed.

I agree with Draconysius, I mean, look at KORN they dress like a bunch of banshee wiggers (no offense) and their hair styles are outragerous, I'd expect a group like Insane Clown Posse to dress like that. But, to the side of it, Korn is a metal band. I guess it's worse for someone to consider themselves within the goth scene and yet not know anything about it, but then again certain other icons or groups take the essantial term harshley (like Andrew Eldritch) and end up changing their music (like THE CURE).

I disagree. I have to, being a musician. Granted there ARE times when dress reflects style. But I dont think that its an absolute.

It's not an absolute, but everything reflects the self.
The manner of speaking, the musical tastes (or musical style if you're a musician), the manner of dressing...
All of them are a representation of who you are.
The problem is when people change these things not to express one's identity, but to express the identity that one thinks people would like. Just look at that fucktard Betty Curse.

I'll have to agree with PersephoneX. Appearances should not dictate your music style. Hell, as a musician who plays metal/rock/punk/acoustic folk, I dress like a complete gangster rapper.
I don't claim to be a rapper or a metalhead but I could see why people would get pissed off if I claimed I was Goth, dressed like one but played metal for instance.
But if you don't claim you're something, dress whichever way you want but can churn out great music, I'm all for it.

It would just be confusing, and a disappointment to BOTH black metal and gangsta rap. Basically, I can forgive bands for attempting to dress or write lyrics like a goth band, but once they start calling themselves goths, or comparing themselves to Ian Curtis (like My Chem Romance), I reallly get pissed.

I got to metal shows dressed like a punk and i survive. But they're only nice to me cos i have big boobs and there are very few girls!

They do for some, just as they don't for others. And yes, I would love to see some "corpsepainted inverted-cross-wearing wargods" playing rap. Why? I was there for the music, not the image. People can judge based on whatever they feel like, I couldn't care less.

I have to disagree with you there, Mir. I think fashion in music is kind of like a different sort of label. Sure, it would finally be fair and just if rappers could dress like black metallers, but as a result, it would be very hard to find a certain type of NEW band to get into because they all look the same, in one way or another.
When I find a new deathrock band on myspace, I'm reeled in by their image. Despite how superficial it seems, a band's image is an index for its sound. It would be very difficult for a band to find fans if it didn't have a unique, but still familiar look. If you can find a deathrock-dressing band, you'll have a much better chance of getting some deathrock music than by simply browsing bands with a blindfold on. This is just my opinion. Band's without a genre-throwback image creates a kind of anarchic chaos.
I also think this only need apply to bands, not audiences. -And bands only need apply if they have a need for finding a target audience.
