Emo is a term coined from the original phrase, Emotive Hardcore. It started out as a branch from the hardcore punk genre, beginning with the bands Rites of Spring and Embrace. The band Rites of Spring surprisingly sounds nothing as most of the bands of this day do which are also coined with the term emo. Why is this? Because this is REAL emo, not this neo-emo stuff that really is nothing more than a form of pop-punk music.
Most people also relate emo music with being really whiney and crying about one's problems. Yes, this can be an element of emo music, but think about all the other bands out there that also have lyrics based on a depressing time in their life. Most bands have emotive lyrics, but they are not all emo.
Read the following lyrics:
"The razor caressed my flesh and my arms turned red,
I feel a vast desire.
Years of pain are flowing down my arms.
Sweet, red, warm stream you drink, make me released.
Give me your hand, let me make you feel the ease,
in the bed of razors we bleed together."
How many of you think those are really emo lyrics? Those of you who said yes, tell me, do you think the metal band Children of Bodom is emo? Neither do I, yet those lyrics came from their song "Bed of Razors". Therefore, as I said, having "emo" lyrics does not make the band emo.

Moving on! The kids you see with the multi-coloured hair, pink eyeshadow, tight pants, etc. are also not emo. There's this thing called "scene," which basically means that these people try to fit into a particular group, but fail. But of course, society doesn't acknowledge this fact and automatically calls them the term which they have used, and in this case, it is "emo". Real emo kids dress normally, because they don't need a specific style to show who they are to the world, and because the emo genre branched from the hardcore genre anyway (much like how the gothic style now was once the punk style). Emo boys don't have the stereotypical emo haircuts, they don't wear makeup, they don't wear girl clothing, et al. They dress normally.

So, please, the next time you see a kid who looks like

please realize that these are not true emo kids, and if they feel the need to call themselves such, backhand them and give them a lesson about who they are.

That would be his post, nothing to exciting, but quite informative, and as for your myspace, it's not dorky, but its not terribly exciting. Then again, I stole this websites layout for my myspace cause I couldn't think of what to use at the time, eventually I'll make my own, but for now this will do.

Thanks for posting that, I remember reading that now. That's a big drawback of subcultures, the "scene" or "fad" people. Not to downplay them, and some will cross over and be real boys one day <insert A.I. movie reference>. I just hate how some of them "turn against" the culture when they move on.. no reason to be grouchy...

It seems like you have a huge problem with the goth culture. First of all, if you expected it, why the hell would you join a goth forum? Second of all, if you're so above, which you must be, since you're complaining about it, why not leave? And no, I'm not trying to start a fight, I just don't understand what you're trying to accomplish.

I bitched due to the increased level of labelling conversation that has popped up in the last week or so, as stated before. I know this is typical, but not usually to this degree. I made a thread with the stated intent:

"Here's the thread to take the same fucking argument to instead of jacking every other fucking thread."

IE- bring the conversation here instead of every other fucking thread on the forum. Why must every thread be "this is goth, that is emo", when only one needs to be???

Further proof that sarcasm is wasted when people take themselves far too fucking seriously.

I realize this is a whining thread, and there's nothing wrong with your original intention; I never claimed there was. However, you seemed to be shitting all over the goth culture, which made me curious why you would be here in the first place. Understand? It wasn't an attack, just a question.

And as for people taking themselves too seriously, if you're referring to me, that makes little sense to begin with, because nothing was even directed at me for me to be offended by, and you don't know me to begin with. If you did, you'd know I don't really take myself too seriously in the least.

Every once in a while, people start to question where they belong in the pecking order (yes, it's instinct) and they ask questions and make statements that anger those who don't wish to dwell upon such thoughts. is that unlike us goths who have loads of stereotypes but only a few of them are true, emos are icredibly stereotypical (even the ones who arent miserale) every emo i know has scored 8-9 out of 10 on the em o' meter.

Seriously, this last week has just had more of the gothier than goth and overly defining etc etc than usual. It's been *like this* for years to some degree, but it's just been really bad this week, all the same.

It's because we're goth, and we believe in something, something very different then the emo culture, and if someone goes around and calls you emo, then you get angry, thus making emo the enemy. We dislike them because they look ALMOST like us, and they act like us but more sad-sac, and less regal, so we see them as things which are demeaning our culture, whether its conscious or sub-conscious is another thing entirely.

I'd read more poetry if I didn't hate reading other people's poetry. In fact, I may never read anything again after taking ENG-215 Creative Poetry because of the stupid amount of damn papers I've had to write about poetry.

I would have to agree with Molly on that, we have stereotypes, we have subcutlures, we have cliches, and we are as, if not more superficial than most other cultures out there, not that I have a problem with it.

There is no problem with it save for when people deny it for what it really is. If you didn't have your sets of aesthetics, intellect, even your own vernacular- how would you set your subculture (? preferred term?) apart from the others?

If you had no general stereotypes, cliches, accepted reading list and etiquette, how would I tell you apart from the theater kids or the gangsta rappers?

Again, not being facetious or anything. And I have no problem with the reiteration of said guidelines, it is a necessary thing for those who are new or merely curious....

There used to be a thread here called "Goth with a Sledgehammer", a few years back, and we would re-direct all of this line of conversation to said thread to avoid thread-jacking and turning the board into one big crowd of darkly dressed Heathers.
