Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Death Cult
As a follow up to the Southern Death Cult thread I made awhile back I figure I'll make this one as well. After the Southern Death Cult was Death Cult. Ian Astbury joins up with members of Theatre of Hate, the Sex Gang Children, and the remains of UK Decay projects I believe. They were practically the first gothic super group and I love them. My absolute favorite song by them is 'Gods Zoo' but I also love songs like 'Brothers Grimm' and 'Horse Nation'. Anyone else a Death Cult fan?

ooo me!~!!
(raises hand)
I adore them, goth rock legends. I like SDC better, but Death Cult beats the Cult's image/music by far.

The Southern Death Cult, The Death Cult, The Cult...
It's hard to keep up with which is which.
I thought Horse Nations was from The Southern Death Cult, for example.
Anyway, the three of them are awesome!

Me too. They have alot more raw energy and their songs are a bit darker, but not droning. I love it, but Death Cult still has it too.

There's nowhere around here where I can buy CDs that arent pop or rap. I'd have to travel over an hour away to even start looking for a Death Cult CD, or even just a Joy division or Siouxie and the Banshees Cd x_x

Damn. I guess you're out of luck for now then. I feel bad for anyone who has to go without Death Cult. Hah.

Nope, because I have Soulseek, if I wanted to, I could download the whole album... hence why I asked to recommend songs, I want to hear a couple of decent songs before I go and put MB's and time into downloading a whole album.

Oh Ok. I recomend 'Ghost Dance', 'Christians', and 'A Flower in the Desert' (redone slower version of Flowers in the Forest by the Southern Death Cult).

Um... I can't believe I haven't posted here before. They're a brilliant band! I love their entire discography and usually have no problem differentiating between Southern/Death/the Cult because only one of them made more than one album. xD
But comparing Southern Death Cult with Death Cult is like comparing apples and oranges. I think SDC has a much more surf feel to them, and Death Cult has a more deathrock feel to them; much more romantic and emotive.

The only exaple of this I can think of is the bassline during part of the Fatman intro. And I guess the Vivisecion bassline, too. Wow. I never thought of that until now. Cool.

To me, it looks (a bit) like this:
Southern Death Cult=Gothic
Death Cult=Glam/Gothic/Sisters-esque "Rock"
The Cult="Hard Rock"/Alt. Rock/Gothic (early)

Yeah, Death Cult and SDC are the best. I can't say I'm a fan of the Cult though, other than a few songs. Gothic wasn't really their genre anymore, not were the themes. I felt they were selling out a BIT, per say.

Damn right.
Personally, I'm a fan of SDC and Death Cult, but I don't care for The Cult much as they strayed from Goth rock.
SDC are legends, though.

As for the surf-ness... listen to the opening guitar riff for "Fatman". I don't know... maybe the word is more tribal? More punk?
But the Cult is definitely worth checking out too. And just because the Cure strayed from goth a long time ago, I shouldn't stop enjoying them. Same deal with the Cult.

Gothic rock, of course, but definetly more punk than 'surf' if it's citing surf rock. All of them are worth checking out, but still I can't say I'm lately big on the hard rock transformation with the Cult, nothing against hard rock but not expected from them generally. Punk or alternative, but not really hard rock.
I love their original work, anyway.
