It only scares you for so long until it comes out worse. It shouldn't even be something on the table unless there are serious suicide fears. (FYI not in me, I'm too careful) People should be allowed to tell how they are without the threat of being locked up, to put that fear into people is stupid and irresponsible.

Self-harm is a much better wway of coping with stress than taking drugs in my opinion. But it is indeed a weakness. My way of coping with stress is video games, but that, too, turned into an addiction.

Sorry for my bad spelling, I was in a small rush and did not check my writing. I am sorry, and it will not happen again, hopefully.

Basically anything can be an addiction, I just don't get why people can't see that they are one step away from being a self harmer themselves, and why we all have to be goths. I'm not a goth, and most of the people I know who self harm aren't goths either. I wouldn't like being called one just because I self harm.

Self harm is another mean of releasing endorphin, is it no different than a drug save that it is not illegal, just ill informed and *eek* harder to hide so you get more positive attention.

Sleep deprivation is the way to go for me, doesn't draw attention and legally numbs your day.

When you do drugs, you're still harming yourself. It's just not immediate or as severe as soon.

The only drugs i've done recently have been limited to coffee, cigarettes and alcohol and I'd rather hurt myself then do those.

I'm bi-polar and used to self-harm. I haven't been able to bare my arms in public for about 10 years now. I have to wear sleeves. I shouldn't say that I have to, but I'd rather dodge the looks I get from other people, or having to explain the cause (like as if it isn't obvious).
I was institutionalized for about 6 months and have been on many different types of medications. From anti-depressants and mood stablizers to anti-psychotics and sedatives. Being institutionalized and seeing the doctor on a monthly basis, really did help me. I would encourage others to seek help as well.
I don't self harm in the sense of cutting anymore, however, I am rather fond of tranquilizers. They numb my brain when my moods consume me.
For the record, I'm no longer taking medication except on an 'as needed basis'. I've managed to cope with my moods by exposing myself in more positive environments. My moods are ok for the most part. I experience minor relapses here and there. If they were to ever get out of hand like they used to, I'd definately consider seeing the doctor again.

That's my point. I'm not anti-drugs, per se, but they do hurt you. Liver damage, lung damage, heart damage. That was what I meant.

Self harm doesn't do as much damage as people think. I had one spot that left little scares, so I don't cut there anymore. The top of your wrist heals quite well I've used that area many times and for a month or two I'd have a little bit of pink, but once I let enough time pass it's like I did nothing. I think it has to do with there being a lot of blood vessels or something. I might just heal well. That and as long as your tools are sharp they slice more and tear less. So yea, it's much better then doing drugs. That and I get irritated when they say that people who self harm are prone to drug addiction, I'm not, I was high once in my life and I didn't like it one bit. I was on Xanax for anxiety when a friend of mine died because I was so stressed my stomach was in pain making it hard to go to class, but I stopped those as soon as I was able to deal with his death, because I didn't like the feeling that they gave me.

Shut up! Just shut up! How old are you?!
Self harm actually does MORE harm than people think. Than the person who is inflicting self harm thinks.
Again, how old are you?!
And where the hell is your intro thread?!

On Sunday I was talking with my friend on the phone and he called me wishy-washy about my ideology and politics. It pissed me off like nobody's business. I will not be wishy-washy about this one. Ladies and guys, you gotta stop slicing into your skin. It's doing a number on your immune system and you're going to get sick. You guys need to speak with a counselor or a psychologist who can help you figure out batter ways to deal with your anger and frustration.
I know. I used to be suicidal and I tried to kill myself several times. By cutting into your skin you are just screwing up your body and making yourself not live as long. You hear me ???
And don't any of you smartasses leave some rude message against me or what I am saying.
You guys need to take it easy and knock off slicing into your skin.

I'm not advocating that you go out and do it , or course it isn't good for you. So is a lot of things in life, but people still do them. Just because it's taboo people put this huge sign on it that everyone that does it must be a whack job, which isn't true, and we aren't all goths either. We want people to understand us and not flip out every time they figure out our secret. Why else do we hid it from people, we hate their reactions to it, because it's usually ill informed. Just so you know starting your post with Shut up makes me wonder how old you are. I'm 23, and I put an intro in this thread because it's the only one I've posted in.

I'm a biology major with a minors in behavioral neuroscience, and psychology and I never heard hat it weakens your immune system. If your form of self harm is overdosing, it will harm your internal organs (I've never done that), but people get cut on a daily basis just running into crap around the house. The only thing you have to be aware of is bandaging open cuts, and using clean tools, so that you don't get anyone else's diseases ie hepatitis and hiv, however the majority people who cut do so in privacy, and don't share tools, because then someone else would have to know about it. Could I see your source?

I don't understand.
You want a link to an article or study? I don't have one. I just am trying to tell you to take it easy, because cutting into your skin will make you sick.

I used to want to die so I drank chemicals and used my dad's tools to slice into my skin and I got very sick and almost died, and I think it is foolish to defend a sick behavior.

Yes, people should seek help for stuff like that. I know its tough, you get asked a lot of questions you don't want to answer but thats a part of dealing with it.

Yes I'd like to see that study. Also it's comments like calling it a sick behavior that isn't true. It's a coping mechanism, and before I started doing it I was suicidal but only once, I never acted on it, and thoes thoughts ended once I started self harming. I think your confusing self harm as a way to cope, and self harm because you want to die. People who want to die should get help, so that they won't prematurely end their life. I have never cut to kill myself, or to make things deep enough to need stitches, I do more in number so I can do less in severity, and still get the same effect. I also avoid certain areas, because I know that's where major blood vessels are I want to be safe. Most self harmer's don't want to end up in the er over their coping.

It all depends on what underlining condition that you have that is making you more likely to cut. If your bipolar getting that under control should help you do less self harm, or if your doing it because you are depressed. However if it's because of PTSD, then therapy will only make things worse, it's better to let the person heal naturally, and give them support when they ask for it. I think I have ptsd because a lot of things that happened when I went to school I don't remember, there are a lot of gaps in my memory. That's where my injury occurred, because I had people threaten to kill me every day. (I'm not over dramatizing this) The only thing that will heal me is time, and keeping myself away from situations that bring up the same feelings.

You know, Gunslinger, saying that someone needs help does not mean you're looking down at them...
