Greetings, I'm Anastasia.
1. What do you do?
I'm a highschool student, trying to do what I want and keep up with school at the same time. Yes, a bit tough I'd say, but it's worth it.
2. Where are you from?
I live in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
3. Who is your favorite author?
Edgar Allan Poe. You gotta love him!
4. What are your favorite films?
Beauty and the Beast, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, The Little Mermaid, Chocolat, The Secret - The Law of Attraction, The Nightmare Before Christmas
5. What music do you want played at your wedding?
I don't want a wedding. But I think an organ concert would be very appropriate.
6. At your funeral?
Also organ, but something really sad and heartbreaking.
7. This IS a gothic website, so... how do you want to die?
Burnt at the stake for witchcraft and heresy... no, not really. Maybe die in my sleep, after tasting all the possible pleasures of this life.
8. What kind of casket would you want?
Something black with silver handles.
9. What's your FAVORITE outfit?
Black corset, simple long black dress, high (but not TOO high)-heeled Mary Jane shoes and lace choker.
10. What's one thing you miss about being a little kid?
Not having many responsibilities.
11. What's your favorite band?
Haggard.
12. What kind of education do you have? What is/was/will be your major?
I'm in highschool right now. I plan on going to 2 different colleges: foreign languages and economics (yes, hard work, but materially rewarding), then I'll get my Master's degree, then my PhD, and after that... I'll see.
13. Why did you join?
Because I'd like to meet open-minded people who are interested in Gothic culture (you don't find such people on the street, you know... not where I come from, anyway)

Female.

Dear Raven, I love your answers No.3 and 4.....I always feel satisfied in strange way not having to convice people about dear Edgar´s qualities...may I have a wish? If you do have (of course you do) romanian translation of raven(if there are more, I would be in extasy), please, would you deliver it somehow to me?...I am making a collection of raven translations, parodies etc.. thank you

Yes, we all love Poe, don't we? Ironically, some would argue that he is not a Gothic writer. But it is my firm belief that he is as Gothic as one can get.
I read "The Raven" in English and I didn't know about any Romanian translation of the poem until about five minutes ago, when I looked it up on the Internet, so the 'of course you do' part isn't quite appropriate.  Anyway, I found three different versions of the translation. I'm still a new member and I just found out that I'm not allowed to insert hyperlinks in my posts... Damn. Oh well, I'll just send them by message. Enjoy!

I am sorry to inform you, that there are people, that DO not appreciate Poe even DO NOT know about his existence...I know, world is full of monsters...I regret my premature conclusion, but I just thougt you also got mad by "nevermore". It is a dream of every translator to achieve the perfection of the word in his native language...there are at least 9 translations(official) in my language, some poets even translated it in several versions...I am very courious about the romanian "nevermore". Could you add a literal translation of the referential word? Thank you

Hmm... Parody, self-mockery and, of course, dark humour. I think this is mostly derived from the fact that he could see things from the perspective of an outsider.
He wasn't involved in many social activities (except for his literary circle), so he could easily detect imposture in his fellow citizens. This is also due to his detective nature, and he used this quality in writing detective fiction.
As for self-mockery... Poe felt the burden of his condition, but instead of merely whining about it, he transposed it into his work, thus exploring the depths of human wretchedness. When he was sober, he laughed at drunken people, but that did not stop him from getting drunk over and over again.
All in all, I think he is a true representative of the American Grotesque, combining it with slight flashes of irony. Oh, and sorry if this sounded like a school essay, I didn't mean it to.

"Niciodata" is the Romanian word for "nevermore". As for the translations... they're not very bright, but then again, it's quite hard to translate a poem, and I think they inserted the word "nevermore" because they couldn't find a rime.
Anyway, I would strongly recommend anyone who really wants to understand Poe to read his works in original. Translations ae not to be given much credit.

Yes, I really like school essays on literature....I enjoy it one learns so much
I read Raven first time when I was about 12 or so....in that time there were as much as no original texts in english(especially american), in my country because of the regime...we even didn´t dream about internet ...the situation is now completely different, luckily...I remember reading Poe´s Philosophy of Poetic Composition in translation with small excerpts in original....it was a feast...I agree completely with reading of the originals....but translation creates a very intimate relationship with the work of art...you start to feel the very movements in the mind of the author...
