Goth (real): I adore the dark blues of The Birthday Party, the gloomy poetics and gestures of Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash has a very neat hawk and really knows how to play the guitar. Rozz Williams was, in my humble opinion, the king of American goth and deathrock and with indescrible genius. I Gothic Literature, such as Anne Radcliff and Edgar ALLAN Poe along with the works of Oscar Wilde. I do have a Vampire Freaks account, though I only use it when Gothic.net is troll-infested. And you HAVE to know the right places.

Draconysius is quite correct, they are definitely not goth, never have been. I like them, and I know Cicero does as well ( I think there are a few others on here too but not many )

I like AFI too, but they're not goth.
And I never said to anyone I'm goth, but other people tend to call me that so I just can't be bothered to argue that I'm an individual, because they don't really listen. But I like gothic music, lit., and I suppose I dress a bit like the goffs.....

Going to be honest, I like some of AFI and HIM's early work. But they're both pop-punk. I think I love some of the lyrics and imagery of their stuff; but a lot of it is ridiculous.

Well this is a very hard questions, since I do not label myself as anything. For some I could be considered goth, but what is exactly the defination of goth? Is it the meaning of the culture more than music and art? What is the true defination? After pondering on these questions I realized that I do not know the answer, but in some ways I could consider myself a goth. I am not really into gothic rock, I am mostly into metal. I enjoy metal, and I can associate myself with it easily. I am sure that the gothic culture has more meaning than just the music, so in that perspective I do consider myself a goth.

I don't self-identify as goth, but I do wear a lot of black and enjoy "gothy" (is that a word?) poetry, literature, and some goth music. I'm more of a lol.ita, to be honest.

I either call myself a goth or a nobody depends on my mood, I qualify for both. If I'm feeling tired lazy not in the mood to think that hard or am just down in the dumps I am a nobody(it's actualy quite good if you are feeling lazy to be a nobody), but if I am in my element then we have somthing there. I think I'll just skip the whole process from now on of explaining if I am feeling lazy or feeling wide awake by saying I'm either a nobody or goth. Now if you will excuse me I am a nobody right now and am off to bed.

Honeythorn speaks the truth.
But I actually think AFI are a little bit goth. Their influences certainly are (they've done enough Cure covers to demonstrate that), and Davey Havok's tastes are very goth indeed. He has Bauhaus tattoos, said somewhere that he's inspired by Rozz Williams, 'absolutely adores' Siouxsie Sioux, and should I mention the Joy Division t-shirt he wears all the time? And his lyrics - especially from around the Black Sails era - aren't at all lacking in the 'dark and poetic' department.
They might not play gothic rock, but AFI sure as hell were spawned by it. In a good way. The only thing that makes them TOTAL POSEURS OMGZ!!! is the fact that they've been on MTV.

But the gothic influence DOES shine through in the music. The Art of Drowning and Sing the Sorrow might not be carbon-copies of previous gothic rock albums, but the dark lyrical themes and generally gloomy atmosphere on a number of the songs leaves it undeniable that they don't at least have some connection to goth. The reason it isn't easily detectable is because there are so many other influences as well (which isn't a bad thing).
And Davey Havok's totally 'poseur'-ish Joy Division t-shirt was what got me into Joy Division in the first place. Check it out, poseur-ness gains post-punk yet another listener! (I won't even get into the ridiculousness that is the term 'poseur' - suffice to say I really really really dislike that word)
You have to remember that gothiness isn't some sacred and untouchable state. It has levels, and I happen to believe AFI are part of one of those levels. I see them as a gateway band for the next generation, a stepping stone on the road to real gothic rock, because that's certainly what they were for me.

Depends on the definition of the word "goth"... but in my definition (which is something along the lines of "intelligent human being who listens to gothic music (ie Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus) and appreciates a darker aesthetic and traditional taboo themes, does not necessarily conform to the generally accepted norms of his society and flaunts his/ her self- identity, freedom of thought and individuality. Might be into history, literature and artistic endeavours."), yes, I'd say I'm definitely identifying with the term.

I don't even know what goth is anymore, and whenever i think i do, someone tries to debate it with me. basically i wear black, try to find beauty everywhere, even where it isn't obvious, like in death, and spiders, i listen to wierd music that would be considered "barbaric," or "gothic" to my peers, and i love shelley, burton and gorey. you can judge me youselves if you want, i really don't care anymore.

Yeah, I've seen pics of Davey in SOS and Joy Division T-shirts and it just left me staring for a while. I thought it was so fucking wierd.

And it's disgusting really, that many maintream alternative acts of today are actually "inspired" by respectable bands.
