Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

The Blues
Are there any blues listeners here? Or even bluesy stuff to get into. I'd like to converse with them. Tell me some of your favorites if you have any. A certain friend turned me on to Nick Cave and Tom Waits, I loved it, but I've always had a good rooting. If you've yet to experience the blues, try it, it's awesome.

The Black Keys are excellent-- they channel Hendrix, but with more of a blues sound. Tom Waits and Nick Cave are two of my favorite musicians. ZZ Top is also great. Jolie Holland is a folk-blues singer with a beautiful languid voice.

I had a chance to see the Black Keys but I missed out. I hear they're awesome. Does anyone like delta blues or chicago blues?

Jaaaaaa, I love the blues- Tom Waits is a blusey start, but I'm into the BLUES-
Koko Taylor, Walter Washington, Etta James, Muddy Waters, Soulard Blues Band, Ellen McIlwayne....
... Edith Piaf, a Blues Chanteuse...
Madeline Peyroux, cajun bluesy...

I don't know much about the blues, but I was exposed to music like that of Leadbelly in previous music classes. I wished I heard more of it.

Hm. Try Muddy Waters. Also try Hendrix. Can't go wrong there. Hendrix actually has a straight blues album. If you want some dark stuff, check out Robert Johnson. Read up on him, some pretty creepy shit.

I agree with Methadrine about Leadbelly...also seek out Son House and Howlin' Wolf for sure. Or even Hound Dog Taylor, the man had a sixth finger (didnt use it for guitar) but its really garage-esque blues-cheap guitars and no bass player.

He's right. It's the feeling you're looking for. Some of this music is rumoured to make people physically sick. Its gorgeous.

Aerosmith made a blues cover album, too. It's called "Honkin' on Bobo".

How would you define Blues?

Do you want fact or opinion?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues
I'd say that Wikipedia does a fair job of explaining. What I find distinct is the singing style, the lyrics, and, most of all, the chord progression. I always found it easy to play improvised blues on the guitar, even though I had trouble with nearly everything else.

Blues is pure expression. In a sense, one has to abandon technicality but still know what the hell they're doing when playing or singing it. It's about one broad sound, not super insanely fast notes. A good tip for blues guitarists is to listen to vocals, to get that sense of playing in their guitar. A good "Talking" guitar player is Slash. He's a blue player but he's in rock bands and he's HEAVILY distorted.

I love blues music, especially early acoustic blues such as Robert Johnson and Blind Willie Mctell. I also love the earlier female blues singers such as Bessie Smith. Favourite style is probably Delta followed by Louisiana swamp blues but I am also partial to the more electric Chicago sounds as well.
