USA or England?

Heh, all that CCTV and they have yet to arrest one 'terrorist'. They do manage to catch the random drunk peeing in public, thats about it.

the problem with all that CCTV is that they don't have enough people to monitor it, so 95% of the crime caught on tape is only prosecuted when police learn of the crime through other outlets, then review the tape of the time/location.

Basically means CCTV is very ineffective.

Also, you ever watch Street Crime UK? It's the UK version of COPS. Police here are NOTHING like American police. To start with, they have the power of 'unarrested', which means if you plead your case well enough in the car, and apologise, there is a good chance they will let you go home with no charges once you get to the station.

Also note, 10 years is like a life sentence in the UK. You only see people get 10 years if the crime is real bad. Most sentences are a year or two, compared to American sentencing which is like 10-30 for the same crimes.

Where as I too think 100% CCTV coverage is very big brotheresque, seeing it in operation tends to relive many fears. You will find it rains alot here and wearing a hoodie 24/7 keeps you dry and off CCTV.

That combined with a police force that has the ability to reason and would rather be out stopping real crime helps as well.

You really can't even use generalities in describing America. How can you compare living in Maui, New York City, San Francisco, Fairbanks, Aspen, Phoenix, the Ozarks, Cheyene, Mayberry.....

I've been to England, I saw plenty of fatties. I've been to Hawaii and Miami, and all I can say is damn.

There is just so much more you can do in America.

Except in England you're in the EU, and within the EU you've got Paris, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam, Florence, Prague, Helsinki, the Alps, the Mediterranean... even Transylvania nowadays. And cheap airfares to all these places to boot!

Anyway- While I haven't had the luxury of knowing what it's like to live in the UK, hopefully some day I will. Yes, it's more expensive than America, but I feel it'd be well worth the change of scenery and I'd learn volumes more by being a resident as opposed to just reading about it and chatting with friends who live there. There's nothing like immersion!

There are a shitload of overweight people in Japan. You wouldn't think so because the Japanese are generally thought of as smallish, but they're everywhere. I get a little annoyed about the "Americans are all fat" stereotype since every developed nation I've ever been to has had more than its share of fat people.

I've been to London, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, New York, Miami (a lot), Los Angeles and a hanful of other cities... and you know where I had the most fun? Houston... Texas. It just proves you can't say anything about a place until you've actually been there.

BTW, how big do you want? OR do you mean that you never want to leave America - so if you had to stay within the confines of the UK, there'd be less to see in total than within America? That's a fair argument, if xenophobic. You seem to enjoy generalising pretty much everything else, so why not the states? If I was forced to do that about the US, I doubt I'd say "obese", or choose anything quite so vulgar and over-used.

I'd probably say something along the lines of "ignorant", "arrogant", "loud", and "generally disliked in the global arena". And I'd be basing that on current affairs, and my impressions of a few hundred americans I've met over the years. Why generally disliked? Again, political choices and decisions that seem to go against the best advice of pretty much every country out there at one point or another.

So far, we've discussed size, weather, the cellulite percentage and dental care of the UK and USA. That's about as relevant as discussing the major military fuck-ups of the 21st century.

yes I do. but I can't name them all, so it's a bit difficult to say exactly where the accents i especially like are from. therefore I generalized it to just british accents. I think it's fairly easy to tell the difference between american and british. (even though some americans speak with a british-ish accent and some brits speak with an american-ish accent.) :3

A difficult choice. Both countries sport a level of boorish oafery considered obscene by the civilised world, a strutting arrogance befitting a coked-up-cockerel and a xenophobic mania that, in an individual, would result in rapid relocation to a padded cell. It is hard to guage which nation has the greater emphasis on maintaining an atmostphere of fear and ignorance, but I would be inclined to believe the BBC at least tries to make a half-hearted nod toward impartial, informed reporting and the British, as a rule, more inclined to observe it. I have lived for some time in both countries, and, while the English have their share of heavy-sweating porkers, I have witnessed some FUCKING HAM-BEASTS in the US. Seriously, it looked like some misguided fool had worked out how to mate buses with spam-filled water baloons and sat the feebly protesting abominations in electric wheelchairs in and around fast-food establishments as a dire and graphic warning of the twin spectres of over eating and unwise breeding. I have had less occasions in the UK where I have stared, dumbfounded, in the face of ignorance so profound it beggars belief, but on the other hand, I have been given less glow-sticks by glassy-eyed pixies. It is profoundly cheaper to live in the US, but low-level jobs are profoundly shittier (Split-shifts, having to smile, ridiculous uniforms, working pretty much for tips etc etc).
On balance, I think I am inclined to prefer the UK. There is still the fin de cicle decadence of a crumbling empire evident in the US, but in the even, measured strides of one eschewing the normal hand-basket and choosing to stroll to hell in order to better appreciate the scenery. They also know how to make a decent cup of tea. (Is it just me or does American tea, sugar and chocolate taste really wierd?)
