Band: London After Midnight

Style: From deathrock (early on) through alternative to darkwave

reason for liking: Their songs are sex in music

alternative band: All Gone Dead

alternative style: Punk?/Deathrock

reason for liking: Their sound is very pleasant and the lyrics always mean something.

Dude, I'm not trying to raise conflict, but how could you call us posers when neither of your two favorite bands is gothic?

He seems to be as deluded as I was when i first came here...just more stubborn and standoffish.

Band:Christian Death

Style: Deathrock

reason for liking: Rozz Williams is god. 'Nuff said.

alternative band: Draconian

alternative style: Doom Metal

reason for liking: Heavy guitar, with beautiful female voice just seem to work well together for some reason.

Band: The Chameleons

Style: Post-Punk

reason for liking: Very stylish 80s band with a lot to offer, as opposed to many bands that have maybe two or three really good songs and 35 mediocre follow-ups. These guys really are the epitome of the entire Post-Punk genre.

alternative band: Pig

alternative style: Industrial/Industrial Rock

reason for liking: Raymond Watts, formerly of KMFDM. What else is there to say? This guy knows his way around 5 strings and, like KMFDM, has a knack for incorporating that into industrial music in just the right way. Difference being that he puts more emphasis on the industrial aspects of his music, bringing more balance into the equation. And unlike many other acts, he's diverse enough to keep it all interesting with each and every new album. Just too bad he doesn't tour the states that much.

Band: Dead Can Dance

Style: Post-Punk, later World Music, sometimes Neofolk, and occasionally Goth (although not by design).

reason for liking: Unbelievably talented, humble, and always fresh. I saw Lisa sing 45 minutes *flawlessly* while struggling with a week-long cold; most people would have canceled the show. Also they aren't Static X or Slipknot.

alternative band: Virgin Prunes

alternative style: Experimental, Avant-Garde, and sometimes Goth (much to their dismay).

reason for liking: Classic band that went from jangly to dancey without flinching, and still keep creepy. Insane live shows. Also not anything like Static X or Slipknot.

I could really just fill this thing out for pages. And sorry kid, I understand you're trying to be helpful now, but you really just want to keep your head down and watch for a little while.

Anything off of "Only Theatre of Pain." You may want to pick up Cleopatra record's "Best Of with Rozz." Later releases with Rozz are hard to find, and if you go for anything recorded too late it's just crap. With Christian Death, it is *very* important to know who was the singer for the album you're buying.

Band: Agalloch

Style: Folk Metal / Progressive Metal

Reason for liking: Excellent guitar work, IMHO. The lyrics always make me think, and the music can calm me down, even if I'm in the most enraged mood. Listening to them at 320Kbps at the top of the hill is just glorious.

Alternative band: Isis

Alternative style: Progressive Metal

Reason for liking: Very little vocals involved. The music is calm and quiet, and makes me think, without having lyrics. The musicianship is very well rehearsed, and has the ability to draw up very odd emotions.

Oh dear.

Google definitions:

Goth: Goth is a modern subculture that first became popular during the early 1980s within the gothic rock scene, a sub-genre of post punk. It is associated with gothic tastes in music and clothing. Styles of dress range from gothic horror, punk, Victorian, fetish, cybergoth, androgyny, and/or lots of black. Since the mid-1990s, styles of music that can be heard in goth venues range from gothic rock, industrial, punk, metal, techno, 1980s dance music, and several others.

Gothic: - Characteristic of the style of type commonly used for printing German
- of or relating to the language of the ancient Goths; "the Gothic Bible translation"
- extinct East Germanic language of the ancient Goths; the only surviving record being fragments of a 4th-century translation of the Bible by Bishop Ulfilas
- a heavy typeface in use from 15th to 18th centuries
- medieval: as if belonging to the Middle Ages; old-fashioned and unenlightened; "a medieval attitude toward dating"
- characterized by gloom and mystery and the grotesque; "gothic novels like `Frankenstein'"
- a style of architecture developed in northern France that spread throughout Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries; characterized by slender vertical piers and counterbalancing buttresses and by vaulting and pointed arches

Geez I don't consider myself a true Goth and even I can tell the difference.

Anyway. Regarding the poll:

Band: The Doors

Style: In a class of their own - early Goth influence

Reason for liking: Jim is my icon - his thoughts, his words and the way he expresses himself through his music moves me in every way.

alternative band: Can't think of one particular band right now.

alternative style: Industrial and anything that's weird and off the mainstream.

reason for liking: Because anything that doesn't come out of a cookie-cutter corporation is usually worth listening to.

I will keep my opinion of the threadstarter's bands to myself >_>

Band: Sex Gang Children

Style: Dramatic gothic rock.

Reason for liking: Their 'execution and elegance', if you will. Andi Sexgang's voice and the imagery in the lyrics have the ability to transport the listener to an age of pure eloquence and beauty. 18th century Europe comes to mind.

Alternative band: Specimen

Alternative style: One of the original Batcave bands with a glamrock twist.

Reason for liking: Specimen is the ultimate orgasm of the musical world.

I think I just kicked my dog.
I'm mentioning it in this thread because it just happened and it would lose its freshness if I looked for a more appropriate thread to say it.
