| Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Black metal
I love black metal. I've yet to find another genre of music whose atmosphere is so appealing to me.
Some of my favorites include:
Darkthrone
Burzum
Enslaved
Absu
Dissection
Agalloch
Dark Funeral
Venom
Silencer
Xasthur
I'm assuming there is a good handful of people here into BM. So, what are your favorite artists, albums, etc?

Immortal
Emperor
Behemoth
Dimmu Borgir
Gorgoroth
Marduk
Vader (if you count it as the topic is about BM)
I've seen them all live except Gorgoroth which I missed. I'd say they all are great live bands and also good on records. Especially Immortal is very heartwarming .

Death Metal is pretty eh. Apart from Opeth, Otep Akercocke and Lykathea Aflame. As for black metal I'm quite fond of Burzum, Forgotten Tomb, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Alcest, Old Mans Child and Satyricon.
You should try the band Nortt.. they are black funeral doom metal... the atmosphere is great. The feel of black metal and melancholy of funeral doom.

I thought Opeth was progressive metal, Otep was more Alternative Metal. Then again, I guess I can sort of see Death Metal in Opeth.
As for me, I am into a lot of black metal.
1394, Bathory, Burzum, Dark Funeral, and Samael are my favourites.

Otep are Experimental death metal I think.. Opeth... metal archives say Extreme Progressive Metal... but I consider them Death Metal... just the vocals I guess. But I guess it's sort of like how Cradle of Filth are extreme Gothic Metal but have completely different vocal styling to most other Gothic metal bands like Lake Of Tears and Lacuna Coil.

The atmosphere and packaging style of black metal has always been appealing to me. I hate when the lyrics turn out to be garbage, though (Hecate Enthroned.)
Recently, I started getting into USBM projects like Lurker of Chalice, Xasthur and Leviathan. It's a pretty interesting offshoot of the original style.

No mention of Mayhem, huh? OK, I see how it is.
Maybe I'll throw in a little Bethlehem, Nightfall*, Moonspell*, Cultus Sanguine*, and second that Samael*.
(* yeah, yeah... all these metal bands cross genres these days, but were at one time Black Metal)

In Flames is melodic death metal.
They're not even remotely black, imho.

yeah, terrible that no-one mentioned them. Even if you can't stand them, you can't deny that they have been terribly influential.
Other than them, you can't really go wrong with most of the big Norweigan bands, such as Gorogorth, Emperor, Satyricon etc.
marduk of sweden are also pretty good, if you're not looking for too much origninality.
The US has a few good bands, although I haven't heard much, and there is a lot of dross.
Also, you just HAVE to love Immortal, Abbath is master of retarded black metal pictures.

Marduk are terrible.
I love BM bands like Xasthur, Nortt, Beherit, Bethlehem, (old) Burzum, Silencer, Velvet Cacoon etc
As you can see, I like my BM depressive. Xasthur has to be one of the best, Malefic is a fucking genius! All of his albums have been masterpieces.

Get hold of Morgul's "Horror Grandeur" record, and play the song with the same title... and be ready to get seriously blown away. Best black metal album, ever.
