Point number one: What did Metallica do for Metal. They brought it to the masses. The reason they're mainstream is because they invented the mainstream metal sound. They were faster louder and "Idon't give a Fuck"ier than anything preceding.

Point two. The fact the anybody that talks about metallica being mainstream and are therefore gay, shouldn't be listening to metal period. Every metal, emo(Gay), blackmetal (Gay), and Deathmetal band of the last 15 years was inspired by Metallica. With the exception of Cradle.. but they suck anyway.

Del, if you don't mind me asking, how do you expand your music repertoire?

It's hard for me to condense how I do it into any sort of ordered process. For older things, I collect samplers of labels and branch out from there. There's also a couple older magazines and fanzines that tend to be worthwhile, although they can be hard to find, and especially with fanzines, the best tend to be the most expensive.

Older labels I've had the most luck I've had with recently are: Midnight Music, C'est La Mort, and L'Invitation Au Suicide. You might also get some luck picking up some old BBC radio samplers; anything that's been tagged by John Peel or Janice Long is going to have a great chance of being worthwhile.

New stuff is harder to pin down. Obviously, Strobelight and In the Night Time are great new deathrock labels. You may also want to check for lineups at Drop Dead Festival and the How To Destroy The Universe festival. Also, keep mindful of what scenes are most active, and look for post-punk, deathrock, post industrial, or noise / experimental bands from any of the more active scenes. CA and Italy are good places to look.

The rest I tend to find thanks to friends who are DJs and vinyl collectors, as well as things I manage to find that look appealing in different, more credible magazines. Unscene Magazine and Drop Dead Magazine are both good current publications.

Also, try to keep an eye on new things from Middle Pillar and Projekt (when it happens).
