I say we forget the mutiplication of matrices and join together to form an unholy Clockwork Army! A vast legion of terrible steam-powered automata, snarling and spewing smoke, crushing the flimsy little 'robots' beneath their cast-iron feet (decorated, of course, with tasteful brass scrollwork)!
Our steam-powered, wind up leviathans will be utterly under our control, for we will not endow them with any 'artificial intelligence', but shall pilot them individually, allowing the ingenuity of human mind to destroy the robotic nemesis!
Ahem.
I... ah, I may have been on brassgoggles again.

Ahh, so are you a closet steampunk, or an open advocate of Datamancer's ingenious designs?
I do love the fact that steampunk technology is the kind that's impossible to balls up except deliberately. It's stopped working? Kick it, give it more coal, wrench open the boiler plate and thump it with a screwdriver. It's gone on a rampage? It'll run out of coal. Hit the emergency shutoff valve, that'll cut off the fuel. Jam a spanner in it.
If you dropped the steampunk equivalent of an ipod into a puddle of water, a watchmaker or anyone with a bit of patience could fix it instead of it being left as a useless mass of frazzled circuits.
Oh! Go play Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. That's got a lovely neo-Victorian feel to it, complete with mechanised arachnids.

Oddly enough, I love machines and was always opening different ones as a kid to see what made them tick. Couple that with a love for computers and robots and a part-time victorian era fetishism and you got one heck of a steampunk love.  Just like you perfectly described, the steampunk technology is so attractive with steam, coal, spanners and kicking, fiddling and.. ah.. I could go on forever. Just to be able to see every part work instead of what we have today (boring boxes which can't be tinkered with) makes me long for a world with technology that would be insane to build but would give humanity so much more to do...
As for Arcanum, got it, played it to death, still play it annually. 
The soundtrack is available for free too if memory serves me right.

Well, if you have a brassgoggles account, I'm Contessa Ellen Graves (newb, as I've been lurking for some time without joining).
Myself and Housemate N are going to be building a server this year, that'll give us a terabyte of storage. We're going to house it in an elegant steam trunk, preferably with brass scrollwork (as mesh for ventilation) and possibly leather details. We're not sure what we're calling it yet.
My machine having been stolen, I can't play Arcanum... but rest assured, it was perpetually loaded in one of the extra virtual drives that Alcohol 52% endowed my machine with! (I liked playing as techie elf. The crossover of disciplines and disadvantages were fun. Also, did you ever try using the Disintegrate spell on Arronax at the end? It breaks the game, heehee)

Don't have an account there.. that site is dangerous, it makes me want to build/modify all sorts of gizmos. 
You could call your server 'The Delkaetre Engine' in homage to a certain book and Babbage's nifty monster of a computer.
Never tried that spell on Arronax, but then again, that game was easy to break with all its bugs.

They got pushed to release it far too early, poor things, and it doesn't help that Troika didn't have the money they should have. Did you find the 'beta tester's graveyard'? It's in the fork of that river that eventually flows down through tarant, it has dedications to many of those who worked on the game. And the little 'bad art' sign that shows on the map of the Kree ruins always amuses me- poor Torial Kel, though, seeing his city reduced to crumbling barbarism.
Ahem. I may be an addict.
I don't think we'll be calling the machine the Delkaetre Engine, as we have a history of naming our machinery after artificial intelligences named in fiction. Examples include Rei Toei (N's new macbook) and Cortana (N's old tangerine clamshell imac).
Anyway- get an account, building is fun, educational, and a good way of imprinting personality on items. You use Instructables, yes? That has many wonderful and useful tutorials...

Anyone here heard 'A Very Scary Solstice'? It's a Christmas album full of Lovecraft-mythos themed covers of popular Christmas songs. It rocks. I'm so playing it all Christmas long to cover the sound of the usual Slade tripe.

Oh my friends have a couple of those! They put a pink dress and sparkly tiara on one of them, naming him/her/it/the eternal darkness within the depths "Princess Cthulhu". Princess Cthulhu has a pink feathery fairy wand.
