Has struck you as a profound lyrical masterpiece? It can even be an artist if you can't think of a particular song.

I'd have to say for myself, some of Enya's music has really touched me. I find her work beautifully executed, not too mention the lyrics are always so fantastical. I always found comfort in her song, "Only If." It was a song that really stuck to me--it made me feel hopeful during times I was feeling down.

I know this may all sound pathetic or even pitiable, but it's the honest-to-God truth. I apologize if I sound like a complete idiot. Anyway, what are some songs that had any sort of impact on you? I'd love to hear about it, and perhaps even discuss it at some length. n_n

Tom Waits' lyrical mastery is nearly unparalleled. All of "The Black Rider" album is wonderful, and is a must-have for anyone's music collection. Individual songs from other albums that stand out in my mind are "Time" and "Small Change Got Rained On (With His Own 38)".

Yeah--I dunno--I am all musicked out at this point-- my hubby likes dance electronica EBM all that kind o' stuff, so we listen to that wherever we go--my daughter likes CELL DWELLER...lol...

Haha, it's all good. We love what we like! I like Nightwish and a lot of people on this forum don't, but I listen to them anyway. And I like Electronica as well.

Also, if you're feeling a bit stressed (assuming you are--I apologize if I'm wrong), I've got a band you may want to listen to and unwind with. Amethystium--I made a post about them, but nobody responded, so I assumed no one has heard of them.

Anyway, Amethystium's music is, by far, some of the most beautiful, relaxing ambient-trance music around. I highly recommend them if you need some audio therapy. =)

Good goth...Well, that's rather a difficult question for me, because I have heard so much music that I'd consider pure lyrical brillance. For a start, I have to Sex Gang Children. The poetic, brooding lyrics mixed with such a bizarre and melodramatic sounds I'd consider such.

The Virgin Prunes and Christian Deaths' early work are very lyrical as well. ``Decline and Fall`` and ``Pagan Lovesong`` for the VPs; and ``Cavitiy`` and ``Romeo's Distress`` for Christian Death. It doesn't get edgier and gother than that, really.

Bowie's work I also find very lyrical. Basically everything from Space Oddity to Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).

For me, it's the Sisters' album First and Last and Always. I've never yet been able to turn it off halfway, and it never fails when I'm in a funk. I'm not sure what it is about the lyrics, but they connect with something in the back of my brain in very good ways.

Also, most anything by Current 93. It's like the Book of Revelations as written by a garretfull of schizophrenic children.

Not a problem at all, I try not to miss too many opportunities to pimp out Tom Waits. You might want to pick up his albums "Rain Dogs" and "Bone Machine" if you like the "The Black Rider." "Rain Dogs" is in his classic blues style, while "Bone Machine" is more modern and experimental. It also has his version of "I Don't Wanna Grow Up," which he wrote for The Ramones. :-)

I think VNV Nation's songs have a profound meaning in their lyrics, like "Testament". Their songs are pessimistic but at the same time they imply a sense of hope. They have a lot to say about the world.

I'm a big fan of Amanda Palmer's (Dresden Dolls girl) lyrics, but it's more about how exceptionally well they fit the music. A real lyrical masterpiece is The Smiths' "The Queen is Dead" (the album, not just the song), especially on "I know it's over". On my first listen, I felt like this song was written for me, you know the feeling?

I'd recommend "Paint the Sky with Stars," which is a "best" album, "The Celts," "Watermark," "Shepherd Moon," "Memory of Trees," and "A Day Without Rain. Anything by her really is exceptional--she's such a beautiful and talented singer.

One song that comes to mind is actually Linkin Park's "Bleed it Out". I not only find it has a catchy beat and very good music, it also has incredible lyrics. I am always astounded as to how Linkin Park can get powerful, meaningful lyrics into their songs, and still keep a rock/rap pace with it.

Japanese songs such as "Isn't it Beautiful" (Theme of Final Fantasy X) come to mind as well, beautiful although strangely strung together, it is a masterwork of lyrical content as well as beautiful musical composition.

Nicklback also has amazing lyrics and songs. "If Everyone Cared" comes to mind. Even songs that aren't meant to be powerful like "Rockstar" get everyone signing along to them.

"Everything Burns" by Ben Moody, feat. Anastasia. The way he describes the sense of loneliness; sort of the alone in the crowd cliche, but much better done.

I second "Bleed it Out." That, along with many Linkin Park songs make up my "Fuck the World" playlist.

Most everything by the Cruxshadows. "Perfect" plays the devil's advocate to my self esteem issues; while "Sophia" is a masterpiece of poetry and rythem.

Excuse the double post, I just listened to "If everyone cared" by Nickelback. I don't think a song has made me think this much since I first heard "Face Down."

Holywood, Which is definately Marilyn Manson's last good album. I found to be really touching, I think i'm the only person who ever listened to it and cried at the end. (let me guess, "yeah! cried because it was so bad" lol)

There are so many more artists aswell that do that to me. I think people like to listen to music that connects with them inside because it reflects a part of their soul and they no longer feel alone in what they think and feel.

Maybe I'm going to deep, I just know why the music I listen to touches me.

I think i'm just used to people not taking me seriously.

I see music as an extremely powerful medium of art, no matter what genre. If you look close enough I think you can tell alot about a person through what they listen to. Things you might not expect. I think some would disagree but I see what I see. I know that I listen to what I do because every song touches a place inside of me, even if i'm not aware of it.
