Would you mind repeating your views on the subject in the same way for a third time? I don't think I understand your position yet.

Don't read the post if it bugs you, but honestly your poor use of a keyboard makes it difficult to take anything you say seriously.

....muahahahahahaha. not.
That might be valid in a situation where one person says to another "Do you hear that?"...and then they both hear it. But.

A few months ago i was spending the night with one of my cousins and we were in her living room watching the television and heard something rather spooky. Both of her boys, ages 5 and 7, were on the couch with her asleep and i was on the love seat across the living room from her. All of a sudden we heard a "freakishly" sounding baby crying coming from the kitchen which is the adjacent room. We immediately looked at each other trying to figure out whether it was on the tv or in the house. She muted the sound and it was still coming from the kitchen.

Well, me being the macabre loving freak that i am, when i realised that it wasn't on the tv, i jumped up and ran to the kitchen. It stopped.

My very rational best friend said it was probably some toy in the kitchen. Ha. We searched the kitchen. No toys. For that matter i babysit the boys on a regular basis and i know every single toy they own (they scatter them all over the house) and none of them make that...fucked up baby cry sound.

Had i been there alone, i could easily chalk the experience up to something reasonable. Yet, my cousin heard the exact same thing at the exact same time without that "Did you hear something?" effect.

Take what you will, believe it or not, yet i know what we heard...i know what i heard.

Carry on.

The best I've got the floating shining doors above me when I was 5, living in Queensland and then there was that time I woke up around 3:00 in the morning (yes I know all about the "witching hour" as it is and this happened this year) and lo and behold there are fucking snakes slithering all over the walls and they didn't stop for at least an hour which is when I gave them the finger and told them to piss off and closed my eyes and pulled up my covers.

Though maybe that had more to do with the fact I see things alot, especially in the morning ( mother found me in the bathroom once apparently delirious talking to "the man in the stripes" and a whale and asking if they'd join me for tea) and I was coming off about 700 grams of gummi bears which I had plowed through in an hour.

Verrrry mature of you. Learn to capitalize, use proper punctuation and try not to look like a moron next time you open your mouth. But do correct me, I can't expect that from a worm, can I?

Hmph, well to be honest I think that in some respect every house is haunted. I'm not trying to scare everyone I'm just saying that it depends on how perceptive you are. For example, if, say, you notice a change in what I call as "a change of atmosphere" as in the mood of a room changes for no apparent reason then you know you are being visited. Call me crazy, I really don't mind, or care, but I'm just saying that this kind of thing isn't rare at all and, in affect, is something that affects everyone

Look, some things "can't be explained" very easily, but.......

That doesn't mean that these things DON'T come from inside your own mind. The mind is very complicated and not all of it's fuctions have been studies yet. It is totaly possible that people influence eachother and themselves without knowing it. Feeling icy fingers down your arm in the dark? Not THAT is extremely easy for the mind to do.
Fucked up baby cries? Oh for gods sake, pipe lines, wind moving some metal thing out side, anything can make a fucked up baby cry. You just WANTED it to be something unnatural, therfor you just didn't take in hints at what the sound really was.
Moving chairs and freaky pics on the phone.....that is more difficult. I can say that is WAY TOO clichè ghost behavior for it to be ghost behavior. Either you moved the chairs while waking past them in the night and forgot that you did it, or your daughter did it or whatnot. The pics, well maybe your phone was in your pocket while it turned on accedentaly and took pic of your pocket....

As to goths supposedly being more gullable in things such as ghosts and fairies.... Bullshit on a stick. Goths are supposed to be intelligent people. How does believing the boogy monster make you intelligent? Also, ghosts are a sort of social stereotype. Goths are supposed to question social norms, right?

And also, wormboy is the most rational thinking of you here so stop making yourselves look likeidiots by attacking his spelling instead of his argument.

True--the mind is very complicated, and very powerful. For instance, it can make us believe that little green pieces of paper are valuable or that the sky is blue (all colors are "in your mind," not in nature).

My point is, saying that ghosts are "inside your own mind" means very little, as there are few things that can be said to be entirely outside your mind.

Yes, the mind can give you the illusion of ghostly fingers running up your arm, but the interesting question is why it would do so in one case and not in another, and why so many people get similar hallucinations at one time.

To my mind, "unseen presences" are at least as good a hypothesis as "random, spontaneous mass hallucination." Better, possibly, because it's more in line with the event as experienced by those who were there.

It's like Deepak Chopra wrote about reality being entirely a product of perception; thus altering one's perceptions of reality actually alters reality.

And the reason I think the fingers-on-the arm thing was so odd is that I didn't have creepiness on my mind at all. I was just annoyed that the cat was being noisy. So I was really surprised when that happened.

I've experienced "supernatural" things that happened when everyone was already completely creeped out from horror movies or ghost stories and started seeing and hearing stuff everywhere. I don't give that stuff much credit. But I've had a couple experiences that were completely unexpected. Those are the ones that usually leave me scratching my head.

My Baby didn't do it -- the she was only a few months old at the time and barely crawling. It was remarkable because I am a clean freak about the kitchen and somewhat obsessive compulsive --everything has to be just perfect before I go to bed or I can't get to sleep, so I know where the table and chairs were before we went to bed.

And cliches are cliches for a reason--like Black people listening to R N B can be typical of some Black behavior -- well Ghost behavior can be typical as well, thereby cliche--doesn't mean it isn't "ghost behavior"...

and Since I am paranoid, I tend to lock my bedroom doors at night--I have bottled waters in such a in a little fridge so I don't go downstairs FOR ANY REASON. I grew up in bad areas where people were attacked in their sleep and such so I don't do the go in the kitchen in the dark at night thing--EVER...--so it wasn't anyone moving them in them middle of the night...

Believe me, I went over and over in my own mind 100 OTHER things that could have happened...

And my mind didn't move the chairs--or create an image in my phone...

Way to many unexplained things have happened over the centuries to simply say paranormal things do not occur--can they be explained scientifically? Perhaps...but until such time they fall under the realm of the paranormal, and saying so doesn't make one an irrational kook just as my being agnostic doesn't make me anti-God... it's just what it is

Umm, yeah, that's exactly what i wanted to experience at that moment whilst watching something on television completely unrelated to anything remotely "spooky".

It wasn't some "pipes"...my cousin has a mobile home (trailer)...on the outskirts of town, a mobile home that she bought brand new not long ago. Metal? from what? It's that kind of rational that pisses me off, rather than look at the situation from any other perspective from your own, you basically just called me a dumbass. Some inept idiot that cannot discern the sound of a baby crying from...pipes.

Let me be a little clearer. The sound...which was a baby crying (i've heard my share of baby crying for i basically raised my baby sister from the time she was in diapers as well as my godson since he was only a few months old)...if you can wrap your mind around it...for a second get the metallic pipes to shut up, the sound was as though the crying coming from a distant place even though the sound was coming directly from the kitchen which was only a few steps away from where we were sitting.

Crying. Not metal. The only thing that could have made that sound was a baby. From the sound of it sounded not more than a few months old. The only difference from that cry and a "normal" cry was that...it just wasn't right. i don't know how to explain it.

Ask your local wiccan shop to have someone check it out.

That is probably a horrible idea.
Wiccans are not necessarily intelligent, and have no real reason to be consulted more than anyone else.

i think she meant more ask them for a reference, as metaphysical *spelled wrong* shop is likely to have connections to spiritual cleansers. Just a thought.

I know why she said it. I don't think Wiccans in general are very adept at dealing with matters like this.

Not to mention that if you ask at a metaphysical shop, you'll probably be referred to someone who makes a business of such things, and is as likely to be a complete fraud as someone who really believes in what they're doing.

And even if they believe, it doesn't mean they know what they're doing. There's a reason freelance spiritual workers have always had a publicity problem.

So you have a ghost. Hallucination or not, if it's not hurting anyone, it just adds character, no?

All the argumentation against my post makes me want to just repeat myself. And so I shall.

The mind is way too complicated to have all of its functions be understandable and, most imporantantly, to have an individual be able to differentiate what is his mind and what is not. Possibly, none of it's reactions are random, just most of the processes unconscious. POSSIBLY, one can send "signals" to others without either knowing this to be the case.

tekajo, you didn't WANT to experience anything spooky. Not consciously. That would be ridiculous. if I want to see a ghost wander through my room it won't come. But it might if certain things fit together in the unconsciousness. You can't possibly know it is your mind playing tricks on you becuase, guess what IT IS YOUR MIND playing tricks on YOU. YOu're in the system, not outside of it so you obviously can't see what is actually happening. What you CAN do though, is not find refuge in superstition that explaines all you want to know, but to try to fuckin THINK about what happened.
There was something wrong with the baby cry, says you? Well probably becuase IT WASN'T A BABY CRY.

I don't know how else to phrase it so that everyone gets what I mean.....
How about just the key word UNCONSCIOUSNESS that is just as little researched as ghosts, but has a much larger chance of actually existing.....

Rae, I don't know about how your chairs moved but I will still insist on there being a rational explanation. Yes, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. Ghost stereotypes come from stories invented by PEOPLE, theri behaviour doesn't go beyond what humans could imagine.

You people just WANT something supernatural to have happened to you. It makes you feel special, gives you the feeling that there is more to this world than just the boring humans and "what meets the eye"....
But there is enough in humans to examine, no need to invent another reality. Just accept that you don't know yourself and start explaining things through yourself before you start finding outer reasons.

I am not calling anyone personally an idiot. I think it is plain stupid to believe in little things that make your life feel more like an exciting movie when IT IS NOT. It is more complicated and interesting. Come back to Earth.

All that, and you still haven't given a reason why ghosts can't exist. Not saying they do, but before you go ranting, you might want to think of a proper alternative, one that covers moving tables as well as weird crying.

It's just as superstitious and dogmatic to refuse to consider ghosts at all, as it is to believe in them without question.

As you said, try to think about what happened. Don't rely on pat explanations, superstitious OR pseudoscientific.

Sidenote: Why is the subconscious more likely to exist than ghosts? Also, if the subconscious can create something that looks like a ghost, feels like a ghost, etc., then what's the difference between it and some mythical Underworld?

My house actually is haunted or whatever you call it. My mom has woken up with her bed shaking (and it continuing to do so after she gets out of it) and has had her makeup bag fly, literally, across her bathroom from the vanity all the way to the tub on the other side of the room. I saw it once. It was like someone invisible just threw it as hard as they could across the bathroom. Scared the shit out of me. A few years ago, I was in bed reading (not sleepy at all) and I looked up from my book and I thought my brother was standing above me. I jumped because I was suprised and he just stood there for a minute and then literally disappeared like that. Now THAT was creepy :/

Yeah. When you start getting mysterious scratch marks on you or when you feel a fist punch you through your mattress at night, lmao, than that's when you should worry, or call TAPS.
