Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Who is the best guitar player alive, to you... and why?
So. we all have our favorites...But, favorites notwithstanding, who do you regard as the best?

I don't think you can pick anyone.
They're all good...but different.

As a virtuose. I'll Say John 5 or Eric Johnson. There are ones up There and that's a ver big shot in the dark, but I based it on expression, skill, and musical ability. Satch(Satriani) is awesome, but it doesn't fill. Via is...Vai. Slash is the fucking blues personified and driven to a point where its pure beauty. He doesn't need speed. Niether does Clapton, whole different style. But as far as somebody being purely amazing. John5 or Eric Johnson.

Joe Satriani is excellent. I hold him higher than other virtuosos because his melodies are generally good, and he uses many more soloing techniques than the more popular examples.
However, I think I view Robert Fripp as the greatest living guitarist. His playing ranges from minimalism, prog rock, jazz, and just plain weird. King Crimson is sweet.

Ok, as for why Weinrich (Spirit Caravan, Obsessed, Hidden Hand) is the best, he writes groovy riff after groovy riff, and his playing is focused on both that and speed. I've been trying to learn every Spirit Caravan tune because of him.
I'd also say Tony Iommi just for how progressive and defining his technique was to music.

Mik Ribiat. The stuff he writes and plays is just amazing and eerie and theatrical and artistic.

I'm going to go the completely-NON-Goth route and say
Dave Matthews. He is pretty fucking amazing even though almost exlusively plays acoustic.

My all time favorite is East Bay Ray from the DEAD KENNEDYS. But Steve Jones from the SEX PISTOLS is my second favorite.

Joe Satriani.
Stue Hamm would be the best bass player in the world though.

I vote bleedingheart344, he's my on-demand MSN guitar player.
As for guitar players in famous bands..........I'm still deciding my choice. Watch this space.
