I think you have 'goth' confused with 'spooky kid'.

Ranting about posers and fakes on a goth forum is pretty much that, unless you were talking about some other strain of poser besides goth ones.

I think you need to tone down the attitude and focus on absorbing correct information. You seem far too primed for a flame war.

Ah and to think it was my question that started this whole thing, I feel relatively proud.

Hmmm... perhaps the music the entire subculture is based upon? Perhaps music that falls under the genre of gothic rock?

Here, I'll help you out if wikipedia is too difficult to handle:
- Bauhaus
- Christian Death
- Siouxsie and the Banshees
- Sex Gang Children
- Specimen
- Sisters of Mercy
- The Cure
- ... And hundreds upon hundreds of other bands, including not a single one that you mentioned.

Try a little research before slapping a label upon yourself next time, if anything it'll save you a few accounts on sites like this one.

Maybe it is because the Llama is the american version of the Camel. They both deal with temperature extremes, both are relied upon by the local cultures, they both have that same cold stare, and they both spit.

I don't give a shit about the occult. If someone ever mentions me how they pray to baphomet or have contacted spirits, I'll tell them Baphomet is my bitch and there's no such thing as spirits, there's only sperm I have spilled and has developed a mind of its own in an ectoplasmic dimension.
And yet I'm almost as goth as Lucas Lanthier and Evilpoppy. Goth has nothing to do with religion, therefore, saying it has to do with the occult is fucking stupid.
Scratch that, everything that has to do with the occult is fucking stupid.

Nevermind that, it's still fucking stupid.
We're not a millenia-old civilization! We just happen to share the same name.
What the fuck do we, adrogynous fishnet-wearing alien fiends, have to do with them, stong, brawny, ale-loving, village-sacking pagans?

For a more historicly specific answer: The whole name issue sort of is like a abnormal game of telephone. The first goths the germanic goth (just plain goth) tribes of Europe were the ones who sacked rome. The Ostrogoths and the Vistigoths split off back in the 3rd century. In the general area to where they expanded to (which covered at least half of Europe) came about gothic architecture in the 12th century. Then as we approach our modern era we come across gothic fiction which is essentialy a cross of horror and romance this is essentialy the most basic element of what modern goth is. Goth fiction eventualy dies out in the early 20th century only to come back half a century later when it is revived by a movment defined by it's sound that evolved from punk better known as gothic rock. Now into the 21st century we see a new genre known as Darkwave the only genre other than gothic rock that is recognized by the Goth community as goth (though controversy exists as to if it is just called darkwave to avoid being called gothic rock). This was my version of the smallest possible way to explain how goth came to be, thank you.

This is a interesting concept. You are using the Amazon genres, I assume? In that case, I would have been right to say that Nox Arcana and Midnight Sydicate are "goth" music, since they are both under the catagory of gothic rock. Also, if you are using that system, you could technically say that the band Evanescence is "goth" music, since it i sunder the catagory of gothic metal.

So I must say, though I have been proven wrong on this site, that you are the one who is wrong, since I mentioned Nox Arcana, and your quote says "not a single band". I assume you meant Nox Arcana and Midnight Sydicate in this quote?

Are you telling me that no goth likes liquor. I can mention plenty that people on this site have drunken: Absinthe, Bourbon, Vodka, Rum, Gin?

Is that all you think the occult is? I am member of the occult community, and I have never prayed to baphomet or contacted spirits. I don't even believe in baphomet and the only thing to do with devil worship that I did was draw a upside down pentagram on a Pentacostal Church. Why don't you take some time to learn more about the people you are insulting before opening your mouth and proving just how stupid you really are.

You cannot be serious. Last I checked, Amazon is interested in selling things, not preserving history. You really do believe whatever they shove in front of you, don't you? You're an amazing combination of teen pretentiousness and consumer retardation.

Why don't you read a credible source instead? They're actually not hard to find, unless you're intellectually impaired... oh wait. Tell you what, here's a freebie:

Wait, wait, wait. You didn't just say that drinking automatically makes one a Visigoth, did you? Because if you did, that was the most absurd logic I have ever heard in my life.

Let me put it simply for you: The Germanic tribes that were known as the Goths and the subculture that we know today as Goth are two different animals - one is an elephant, the other is a leopard.

And no, for the millionth time, Evanescence is not a Goth band. Not only do they not fit the genre in the least, they are mainstream. Goth music by definition is not mainstream. You don't see Bauhaus and Fields of the Nephilim on the Top 40 list, do you?

No, I did not say that drinking makes one a Visigoth. I was proving Godslayer Jullian's thoery that we have nothing in common with Visigoths was wrong. Also, Bauhaus and Fields of Nephilim is pretty mainstream here.

To Romantic Raven:

At least someone on here understands sarcasm, though your sentiments on what I am trying to prove is completly incorrect. I am simply debating on the true meaning of goth, though, since it is a subculture, it is really hard to truly prove what meaning is actually correct.

Sounds to me like a case of being deliberately difficult. Mincing words is a waste of everyone's time.

Where is "here"? If you mean this forum or the Goth subculture as a whole, sure, in a sense Goth bands are mainstream, but they certainly aren't in popular culture. Again, mincing words...

You're not debating anything. You're just trying to feel special because you think you're being cute. You're not, and you aren't.

Dude, wearing raver pants with combat boots accented by shitty band shirts, doesn't make you 'goth'. Neither does dabbling in the 'occult', or listening to shitty maintsream bands like Slipknot, Linkin Park, or Dimmu Borgir.

PS. are you one of the idiots wearing lipstick in this photo?

If so, don't fret. You'll grow out of this terribly misunderstood phase. I almost guarantee it.

The amazon...genre...system? Are you fucking serious? Amazon just emailed me to tell me about a great deal on a HIM album. Past few albums I've bought on amazon: Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Fields of the Nephilim, and Strange Boutique. And they are now recommending me HIM, because they clearly have such accurate genre knowledge ::rolls eyes::
