Wow...

I'm a fan of his music but I do agree the man's a dickhead. Then again, a lot of musicians sell out and merchandise to the point of where its absolutely ridiculous. Look at KISS. Hey...better mansinthe than Marilyn Manson brand condoms...

On the other hand, I'm willing to bet that it wasn't his idea. It was probably some money-hungry music manager wanting to make a profit off of the goth stereotype.

There's nothing wrong with pushing merch. 'Mansinthe' is admittedly uninspired, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't sell it. Sure, he's a musician, but he's a businessman, too. Nothing says you have to sacrifice one for the other, and in my opinion, he doesn't.

I honestly agree. I would probably use my fame to get money of all those kiddies, then use it to buy myself a new face so that no one recognizes me.
The I'd miss my old face.

He's a polarising person in the gothic subculture because he took an underground movement and turned it into a sell-out pop-culture fiasco.

He brought in aspects which never existed in the culture prior to his arrival.

Goth is not about satan, or devil worship. It's not about ****, or homosexuality. Where some can read in such references in *some* gothic music, manson used these themes to shock middle America into noticing him and used that publicity to become a pop-culture icon.

Is he talented? Well, it took *some* skill to do what he did. That doesn't mean he's a good artist though, and it also definitely doesn't mean he is by any means a good representation of our music or culture.

The thing that bothers me is in is efforts to make a million, he wrecked the subculture. 'Mansonites', which now abound in many places, who don't like goth music but like bands like manson and slipknot instead now try and claim they are part of something they really aren't, once again giving off the wrong impression about our scene.

He is a cheap version of Alice Cooper, who used stage theatrics to claim he was king of heavy metal, or GG ALin who used his own theatrics to claim he was king of punk. While both do have *some* talent, neither were truly involved in the scenes they claimed to be a part of and both used outlandish behaviour to profit off those very scenes.

This is yet another artist using shock value to make a buck. It's just sad people think that is what we are all about and use that as their frame of reference when talking about 'goths'.

Yeah, Manson USED to be awesome, but now he's the equivalent of that creepy janitor in school--always there on the fringes of your vison, checking out the kids and weirding you out by him just being there. Janitor!Manson would also have a primer grey van that smells of sadness.

Just asking, did Manson ever say he was goth? I don't think so. So maybe at least for THAT lets not give him the blame.

Manson is too much of a nihilist to care what people think of him. He lets people make up their own minds about him. It's perfect really. He just does what he does and fuck what happens. A reaction is a reaction.

He may not have done anything goth, but must have done something right.

Manson doesn't like labels. He tries to avoid them because they don't accurately describe him. I've seen the word goth used by him ONCE! and that was on a license plate in the music video for his cover Tainted Love which was directed in correlation with the "Not Another Teen Movie" movie. It was what the director decided, not him.

So if I put on a cowboy hat and boots and start singing music that sounds like Dwight Yolkam, then someone calls me a 'country western' musical performer I should tell them off? Are they wrong for making that statement?

He took the look and sound that was there, and then exploited it. To now say he doesn't use labels is inconsequential - he knew enough about labels to find one he likes and rip it off.

That being said I liked his very early work. Also, in his interviews he seems like a nice lad with a good grasp on reality and some informative views on government and society.

Still doesn't excuse his ****** of our subculture to fatten his wallet though...

I must say, Manson has indeed commercialized the goth subculture. Here's why: Though he has not called himself goth, he has let other people make the assumption that he is. Because of this, you have all of these little kiddies running around with a skewed perception of what goth really is, all because Manson neither confirmed nor denied these accusations and claims. As for marketing, it doesn't take much to make these kids leech off of a new popular idea. You milk them slightly in the beginning and lure them in, it's all over from there. You can get them to buy anything.
