Age of dating?

Oh no, I'm back! The Fear! (cookie to the person who guesses where I just refered to.)

Lately, I have been wondering. How much older/younger would it be acceptable for the one you are dating to be?
Ofcourse, this can be very different from person to person, but I'm thinking of a guideline.
Personally, I think, that age is nothing but a number. But still, it would be a bit weird for a 25-year old guy to date a 13 year old girl.
I just wanted to hear your oppinion on this.

To me it's not weird ... Why should I find this weird? ... As long as both are happy and get what they want , who cares ...

As open as I am to most things, the idea of such a huge gap kind of makes me uncomfortable. Without getting into the legal issues, the two people are at such vastly different stages in their lives that I don't know if it would be appropriate and/or healthy. But that's not to say that I think age differences are bad. The importance of age drops dramatically when people reach about 20 or so. Then there can be a larger gap (say 20 and 35) and it is not so awkward.

Historically it's not like it hasn't happened: the Romans, Puritans, and Pilgrims would all take wives younger than they were, and even comedian Charlie Chaplin was 54 when he married his 3rd wife Oona O'Neil when she was only 18.

Yeah, I agree with Mistress Lilith, the age range acceptable for romantic relationships increases with age and plateaus in adulthood.

I've heard of the "half-your-age-plus-seven" rule, which supposedly can accurately determine the minimum age of a potential lover. As one's age increases, so too does the range of ages in which it is socially acceptable for them to date.

I doubt that a 13 year old would have enough maturity to be in a relationship with anyone.

But as for relationships between consenting adults, it's just a matter of preference. Personally, I don't usually see having much in common with a girl who is that much younger/older than me.

ehhh... the acceptable range can vary. It really all depends on both parties maturity. IMO, after 19... Then again, I rarely date below 20, or above 23, myself being 21 :P

Well actually I was using that historic fact as a point that kind of got crossed. What I meant was that just because it has happened before, it doesn't necessarily make it right 500 years later.

I'm not in support of it at all, by the way.

Funny. I was thinking about this my self a few days ago.

I remember having a discussion with a friend about the age of consent and how legally it's different for men and women. Something about a man can only legally be with a seventeen year old, but a woman wouldn't get in trouble for being with a sixteen year old. Don't quote me on that. I don't think that's exactly what he said...But something like it.
He's the law major.

Don't know if that's "right", though. Seems confusing. But...

Theoretically, I don't know if I completely believe it matters. I don't. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's appropriate for a thirty year old to be with a fourteen year old.

But, what if a fourteen year old wants to be with a nineteen year old?

Eh...i'm not so sure. It doesn't seem so wrong.

If you are over 17, though, the age of consent, you can and should be able to be with someone twice your age or older. I don't see why it would matter. Unless, of course, it matters in the mind of the other person. If not, then let it be.

i'm with someone 20 years older than me. and i'm 18. we've been living together for about over 2 months now. it doesn't bother me at all. i've always been attracted to older guys. but it kinda irks me when i hear about girls who are 13 and dating guys who are way too old for them. they are not mature enough. im yet to meet one who is. the exception is one of my friends, who just recently turned 16 and just got married to a friend of mine, who's 20. she's pretty mature for her age, i think.

I have been attracted to older men as well. With women, I don't know probably prefer her to be closer to my age, but with men...no. Men my age make me feel very icky, like I'm molesting them. I have no idea why.

Have you seen the younger set (13-16) of teenage boys? I'm not touching that with a 10 foot pole, much less date it. My bf's 2 years older than me though.

I say if you are 14-16, don't date anyone over the age of 20. One you are 17-19, you can pretty much date any age. I know a girl who'sw 18 who fell in love with her 30 year old teacher and they are together now. Nothing wrong with that. Well...it would be better if it was someone her age, but hey, it won't last forever. They'll break up eventually!

Not really.
Because it's not just guys MY exact age
I don't particularly like "boys" (hate calling them that) that are even a few years older than me. So my age, or AROUND my age, does not matter.

However, if you are just great in your mind, I will not even think about judging you by your age.

Women however, I will take any age, though probably due to maturity levels no more than a err...7 year difference.

I am not saying ALL men mature a tad slower than women, but there is a large number that is unfortunatly so.

Also, I do not see anything wrong with significant age differences. I just can't for the life of me see anything wrong with it, other than legal and social issues the couple may face.

Well the thing is may be they cant follow you, but they can sense you are getting away too fast, and then feel slower, stupid or just not enought, and I got the feeling you dont hide that (of course you dont have to).... so if they find you molesting is may be because you are molesting them ^^

Probably you worry about it, I just dont care about people, as nietzche I love humanity but hate people, in some way I prefer persons over people.
If someone is uncomfortable arround you, well you have two choices... change yourself, change the people arround you ^^
