Nothing wrong with Wal Mart. Well other than the "it's a big money money grabbing corporation blah blah"
It has cheap stuff, I like cheap stuff. Walmart is fine.

Yeah, I wasn't rude at all, I was confused. You're the idiot who doesn't realize that sometimes, people in different parts of countries use different terms for things.

It's ok, you'll make it one day.

Calm down, no one's going to think you're living in 'The Hood' because you saw a black person. I'm sorry if my question seemed 'anal', but the way in which you felt compelled to note the race of the people bothering you struck me as odd. Adjectives, such as 'black', serve to qualify nouns in the context in which they exist, and are usually only implemented when to omit them would inhibit your ability to convey that which you wish to convey. You, in particular, seek to express to your audience the manner in which people at Wal-Mart responded to your clothes. Ergo, had you said something like " I walked by a man with 40 facial piercings and I could hear him whispering about me to his friends", the sentence wouldn't be questionable, as the fact of his forty facial piercings contributes to your description of his response the true irony of the event, which, otherwise, would be lost; however, an individual's race has no effect on the way we percieve that individual when he whispers loudly about a goth kid in wal-mart, and therefore isn't pertninent to your statement. A black person berating your clothes as you walk through Wal-Mart is just as rude as a white person berating your clothes as you walk through Wal-Mart. Also, though your sentence 'I would walk by black people and hear whispering' suggests that, during your time in the store, you had strolled past several random, unrelated individuals of color who'd all independently whispered about you, I've gleaned from your second post that, in reality, the whole affront was perpetrated by a single group of boisterous folks who happened to be black. That you yourself aren't quite immune to the 'close-mindedness' which afflicts the population of your region seems possible.
Just explaining my reasoning.

Why do you say "blah blah"?
That "blah blah" is the entire point of why not to buy at Wal-Mart.
Just because you don't realize it and interpret it as pointless ranting doesn't make it unimportant.

I've been in the South, and know people from the South, and have never heard the term buggy, sorry.

Also, on the topic of people and comments made about your attire, either deal with it or dress differently. It's not the end of the world, you probably won't ever see those people or talk to them in your life. What does their opinion count for?

Well I don't care that people look at me. Hell I like going to Wal Mart with my green mohawk, studded and patched jacket, army pants and combat boots. When people look at me weird I give em' the Sid Vicious lip, walk away and laugh. Plus it is somewhat stupid to get in an argument over shopping carts.

People don't look at me too strangely. At least if they do, I don't notice. I'm slightly oblivious. I don't dress too out of the norm though. I wear either black tights or striped socks with boots and a black skirt of some sort.

And also, Stormtrooper, 'tis quite fun to get into shopping cart wars.

Yes it is. Plus I love punk and like to express myself with my dress style. The point is you are what you are, not what people want you to be.

If you had an AIM chat window up, that usually means someone has left or just signed on. My friend has one that gets me every time.

This is like a math problem, there's 50 different ways you can solve it, but really you can just do it 1 way and still get the same answer.

Lmao. This, actually, is all really funny to me.

1) Calls them both buggies and trollies, and shopping carts. Just depending on my mood. =P

2) Odd, I'm in Tennessee and I entered out local super Wal-Mart (I too have a strong disdain for that place) Saturday evening and there were at least two groups of 'alternatively' dressed people. One group was Goth (I'm guessing), the other was more of the mall goffs/emo-types (rather bouisterious as well). I was dressed rather conservatively, though in black, red and dark gray. Myself and the otehr two groups all sort of acknowledged eachother as we passed with a nod of the head (sort of a custom in this area). No one really I think gave any of them, or I much attention.

I will say, if you dress differantly, you shouldn't be surprised if people act odd. It's the society we are in. If it offends you, I would say dressing Goth isn't for you.

It's a Southern term nonetheless. I spent half my childhood in Atlanta, the other half bouncing between San Diego, Sonoma, and Toronto. "Buggy" is a very uniquely Southern term, particularly among those actually born and raised here...those of us who moved here later tend to not adopt it. I was actually trying to explain to the poster why others may not have heard of the term she was using, not justify its existance. However, if that's what you're questioning...yes, it exists and is used regularly here. I hear it every time I go for groceries. It's silly to tell me that just because you haven't heard it, I must not have either.

Nope, I've got a Mac, so I use iChat, which doesn't make noise unless you tell it to. But I didn't have it, or iTunes, or another Safari window open. Just this website and a spreadsheet. So am I crazy? Because my computer made a crazy-ass laughing sound, I swear. Now I'm concerned about my mental health.

Ok, since this is apparently the thread to straighten out associative and linguistic discrepancies based on our diverse cultural paradigms, will anyone care to tell me:

What is Wal-Mart?

*So I don't live in the US and there's no Wal-Mart in South Africa*

I'm thinking a type of multi-department store. Warm?

It's like a grocery store, mixed with a general store. And very big (some nearly 30,000 square metres)... It carries a little of everything, and every thing is really cheap (both in price and usually in quality).

Where I'm from, mostly inhabited by scary rednecks (slang term for country people)

You know what, I really don't care anymore. I'm sorry everyone if this got blown out of proportion. It really wasn't my intention to start some big argument.
And you know what, maybe I am racist and just never really knew I was, but you know what, I learned what is being racist and what's not being racist.
So in a way this big debate was kind of a good thing.

I wouldn't say that you are racist or anything that extreme, I don't know you well enough to make that call. I think your post just came off differently than you intended. All the same, almost everyone harbors thoughts that are not all sunshine and light about others who are different due to race, gender, and whathaveyou. Not saying it is good or right, but that it usually simply *is*. Just be honest with yourself about it, regardless.

All the same, we call it a "cart" in Missouri, but down in SOuthern Arkansas, they called it a "buggy". Regionalisms abound. Is it a soda, a pop, or a coke? Is it a roly-poly or a pill bug?

English in a big country is fun.

Black is a common gang color, at least where I live. Especially those that wear all black. What a terrible coincidence eh?
