d.Nox: Yet another newbie
Not being one for long introductions, I'll get straight to the formalities:
1. What do you do? (Hobbies, job)
I lead a retiring life with my wife and infant son, proofreading textbooks from home. The reading continues in my free time, with some writing for variety. I seldom leave my house, largely on account of item 2.
2. Where are you from?
I live in a small town in Utah, the sort where everything closes on Sunday and people cross the street to avoid passing me when I go for a walk. I've done my time in purgatory, though, and should be moving to somewhere a bit livelier--and rainier--come February.
3. Who is your favorite author?
For fiction, Umberto Eco, with Hawthorne a close second. For poetry, T.S. Eliot, after whom my son is named. I mostly read non-fiction though, with a heavy emphasis on mythology and philosophy.
4. What are your favorite films?
Anything slow and thoughtful--Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man is wonderful, as are most of the films of Kim Ki-Duk.
5. What music do you want played at your wedding?
In reality, it was the Hero soundtrack--nice drummy stuff--but if I did it again it would be Peter Murphy's "Your Face."
6. At your funeral?
John Rutter's requiem mass, especially the De Profundis.
7. This IS a gothic website, so... how do you want to die?
Caught up in rapturous ecstacy and surrounded by heartbreaking beauty as my body dissolves in shimmering corpuscules. Failing that, I've always been partial to starving to death on a mountain top.
8. What kind of casket would you want?
Currently I'm fascinated with being composted; if that's not available here by the time I die, I trust my wife with the arrangements, which means I'll probably end up mummified and in a coffee table.
9. What's your FAVORITE outfit?
Black jeans, combat boots, studded belt, black military-cut shirt, and my old leather jacket. And sunglasses. There's not a lot of reason to get all dressed up around here, so I go for comfort.
10. What's one thing you miss about being a little kid?
Exploring ditch banks full of rusting agricultural equipment.
11. What's your favorite band?
Bauhaus--no matter what else I listen to, I always come back to them.
12. What kind of education do you have? What is/was/will be your major?
B.A. in English lit. and philosophy, plus several years of passionate though meandering autodidacticism.
13. Why did you join?
Something to do when work's slow; plus many of the posters here have better grammar than most places on the Internet.
14. If the first 13 questions didn't give it away. What is your gender?
Male.
So much for introductions. I'll be lurking in the background more than I post, most likely, since I don't have a lot of free time; a pity, as there are several people here who seem good for a long conversation.

Thanks, both of you. I'm glad to be here, and will try not to make an ass of myself too quickly.

You are my favorite new person so far. I mean shit you're like the only other person I've ever heard mention of composting. And Umberto Eco and Bauhaus in the same post? Kick ass.

No, I've missed Bauhaus every time they've come near here, by freak coincidences and bad luck. I have seen both Peter Murphy and Daniel Ash as solo acts; based on the sheer charisma each of them brings to the stage, Bauhaus must be something truly wonderful.

HAH. I HAVE SEEN THEM LIVE.
I think that means you need to kiss the dirt I step on or something.

LadyLucretia, have you read Foucault's Pendulum? It's Eco's best, in my opinion.
And thanks for the kind words!

I also *quite* enjoy Dead Man. I think it's Johnny Depp at his best. Also, Neil Young did a bang-up job with the music for the film, don't you think?
By the way, welcome to Gnet. I'm Amarantha, and I can frequently be seen spouting off useless information laced with my opinion.
I hope to see you around.

I figured I'd post this here, since it doesn't really deserve its own thread...
I'm going to be taking a break from g.net for a while--three months at least, and probably more. I'll be moving soon, and so my life's getting too busy to spend enough time here to keep up with things. So perhaps I'll see you all (or those that stick around) sometime next year, $DEITY willing.
Carry on...
