LOL!
Though I'm very inclined to agree with Darren, since *most* bands wouldn't even exist were it not for the Beatles, especially those I like lots. That's not to say I don't love them myself, cos I do. Alot.

It's true, the Beatles are possibly the best band ever. This is more of a fact than an opinion. I don't like them much but I respect their music and all that they have done for other bands.
As for the best goth band ever, I'm undecided.

It's hard to choose one band that you think is the
greatest, so i have to add 1 or 2 more that were
my most influential/favorite; MC5, The Stooges,
The Cramps, The Jam. When I think of greatest,
I automatically think back like greatest of all time,
so that puts me back to the innovators that set the stage
and influence for the bands I listen to know.
Which still is never that current. Plus I think of all
genres i like so this is a very difficult question.
I'd like to add Bauhaus and Christian Death for
the darker side of it all, but there is plenty, plenty
more!

There's alot of bands I like. I'll just make a short list so I don't end up going through the endless list of shit I have on cd and mp3. My favorite bands: Burzum, Graveland, Vordven, Megaherz, E Nomine, Das Ich, Lustmord, Archon Satani, Desiderii Marginis, Helium Vola, Era, Magna Canta, Edenbridge, Tristania, Sirenia, Sengir, Disturbed...

I'm really suprised it took almost 3 pages for someone to mention Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. They are easily my favorite band at least at this point in my life. That is not to say they are the best or greatest band ever. That honor is probably taken by the Beatles or perhaps Pink Floyd in my opinion. However the deep literacy that Mr. Cave brings to his work along with seeming lifelong desire to be an evil southern preacher man keeps me listening and has for years.
However given the recent quiet explosion of piano based rock and singer-songwriter work the short sad career of Nick Drake could use a second glance.

I don't think I could pin down a single "Best Band", my preferences change around about as often as the seasons. If I had to pin it down to a few tops that I keep coming back to though, I think I would have to throw out Sisters, Cure, Die Form, Beatles, Legendary Pink Dots and Joy Division.
I dunno, the idea of "best" has always bothered me a bit, it's subjective afteral and conversations like this always feel a bit like some people trying to enforce their viewpoints on others. Could be wrong though.

The band that really defines "goth" (to me at least) is probally Bauhaus.
They're not my favorite band or anything, but a goth site deserves a mention of a "most goth" band.
My favorites would have to be (in no particular order) Cruxshadows, Cradle of
Filth, Christian Death, Arch Enemy, and Sisters of Mercy

Clearly the best band in the world is Iron Maiden.
However, many of the suggestions here are pretty good too.
Siouxsie and the Banshees are very beloved to me, however, there does seem to be people suggesting flash in the pan stuff as being great, I mean, slipknot?, what?, I suppose they're pretty good in a way, but they aren't exactly pioneers in their field, you know?

Hm....
Favorite band of all time: Blind Guardian. They have been for the last six years, and it doesn't look like that is going to change. Second favorite band: Lake of Tears. They were the first real metal band I ever heard for the song "Raistlin and the Rose".
Other bands I like:
Nightwish, Cruxshadows (I actually saw them live! *faint*), Malice Mizer, Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society, Violent Femmes, Cure, Ivan and the Necrolytes, Nick Cave, (early) Theatre of Tragedy, Current 93, London After Midnight, Amon Amarth, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Apocolyptica, Dungeon, Dragonforce, Edguy, Sonata Arctica, Symphony X, Nosferatu OH! the list goes on and on....
Dream Theatre, Falconer, Gamma Ray, Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards, Joy Divison, Morgoth, Moonspell, Waylander, Stratovarius....

Erm...Jane's Addiction, Sisters Of Mercy, Immaculata, Smashing Pumpkins, Opeth, NIN, Skinny Puppy, Dream Theater, Pantera, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alien Sex Fiend, Wumpscut, Rosetta Stone, Black Label Society??? oh, I can't decide!
BY THE WAY....I wouldn't count Marilyn Manson as Goth Music...he's breaking quite a few barriers of goth Music..I'd call him weird (I don't hate his music by the way)

Well here are some of my favorite goth metal bands.
Type O Negative
Tapping The Vein
Katatonia
Mercyful Fate
Lacuna Coil
Nightwish
My Dying Bride
The Sins of Thy Beloved
Lacrimosa
Moonspell
After Forever
Black Tape For a Blue Girl
Sirenia
Jack Off Jill
Mandragora Scream
Autumn
Collide
London After Midnight
Hehe, love my goth metal =)
A Letter to God By, Tapping The Vein
Is this life this degradation
this pointless game, humiliation
Born to die, we're born to lose
and not one choice we make we choose
And when this life is at an end
we find that Death's our only friend
Must we suffer through your games, oh Lord?
Can God really be so bored?
We waste our lives destroying, hating,
while beneath our flesh a skull lies waiting
Blind to beauty blind to love,
we fear of our loving Lord above
Some live their lives to play their games,
some live as victims, the insane
Your experiment oh Lord has failed
and I trust that when we meet you will forgive us
It's futile so I'll end this note
and find a knife and slit my throat
and come to track you down oh Lord
you better watch your back,
be sure that when we meet you'll be surprised
no loving praise, no glee filled cries
Just pain and hate and tear filled sighs
and the question in the end is "Why?"

Maiden's always had a nice warm spot in my heart, along with Megadeath. And I'll admit, MSI is my guilty little pleasure.

Well, I'd let you know what the brand spanking new DVD is like, but the two main music shops here fucked up and only have the CD!
