I'm not sure if there's already a thread for this, but I haven't seen one about it recently so here goes.


Are there any EGLs (Elegant Gothic ******s) here?


Many ******s argue that Gothic ******/Visual Kei is a lifestyle rather than just a fashion scene. It has a lot to do with music of course, but it also emphasizes proper etiquette which I found to be lacking in Western Goths (not the etiquette itself, but rather the emphasis in words or insinuation of it).

So, what do you think?

Actually, no. It really IS just a fashion scene but a lot of them listen to some downright terrible J-Rock which alienates them from the few J-Goths who are of the camp that the music is more important than the fashion.

And I'm SO with Jillian on this one about etiquette but with a slight correction. The stereotypical "Life is only worth living if it's a Victorian/Edwardian narrative even though they were repressive, racist and downright creepy eras" goffs stress etiquette as well mainly because it gives them leverage to their claim that bustles+hoop skirts+outdated Victorian social customs=better than everyone else.

Though I do tend to use etiquette in reality, I don't make it a fixation and priority in my life unless I'm at a dinner party with friends, family, and so on. The whole gothloli concept never appealed to me really. I think it's rather childish looking for a teenage girl to wander about in a bonnet and bustle skirt. Don't get me wrong, I love Victorian fashion, but I'd never take it to that level. I'll just stick to my cravats, cameos, tailored jackets, and long, swishy skirts.

Yea I am kind of the same way. Loli doesn't appeal to me at all but etiquette does. Etiquette almost goes hand in hand with fashion in a way. I mean, when you dress for dinner or for the theater, etc. it kind of goes along with it and accentuates a certain elegance.

Nowadays you can't find etiquette nowhere . Not saying I'm obsessed with it , but when it's rare it becomes kind of precious .

May I say something here?

Observing certain customs, or mannerisms as an individual, does not constitute it being a requirement for all other individuals, who are some how related to the first said individual, to adhere to the etiquette.

And on that note, I find it attractive of women who do practice etiquette, and loli and Victorian fashion can be quite elegant. I rather like both, to be honest. Personal opinion, doesn't mean I think that all should do it, or it makes you a better person. To me, it's just like if someone finds tattoos or piercings sexy, doesn't mean they expect (or shouldn't) everyone to pierce and tat themselves.

EDIT: All that said, when you dress a certain way, are you more or less expressing yourself? Therefore, with this innocent (or, well, maybe not the right word)/regal attire, are you not insinuating that this is an outward display of your conduct?

Not that is has to be, by no means, but it is precieved as such by many.

Expectations and requirements are different in degree, although they still convey the pressure to conform. One may not be arrested for neglecting to act an expected way, but, as our thread-starter Smile explained, there are some in the group who do expect more than just an appreciation for the fashion and music. I think pressuring such a thing as etiquette is silly... but, so many things are in our world anyway. Meh.

Such is my perspective of ******; the view of an outsider. I doubt I'll ever have anything to do with it.

I agree with this statement. But, Oh! What beautiful dresses and hair! Personally, I like the Horror version the most. Frilly dresses all covered in blood? What could possibly be unsexy about that??
