History destroyed
While this isn't anything big by national local or international terms I find that this is still a rather terrible case.
As I was talking to my Vice Principle who was a former Commander (it's equal to the rank of Lt. Colonel in the army) in the United States Navy I brought up my future service in the Signal Corp only to be responded to with a story of an interesting neighbor of his.
This neighbor was a former member of the United States Signal corp during World War I. As you well know this was the beginning of the age of aircraft that we live in today and witnessed the usage of the airplane for military service. As you might not know the Air Force did not exist yet as a branch, so the Wright brothers worked with the United States Signal Corp to develop military airplanes. This neighbor of my Vice Principal served as one of these fighter pilots during World War I.
According to the Vice Principal he kept a box stocked full of pictures and other artifacts from his service. Eventualy at one point he offered his collection to the Vice Principal only to have the offer turned down so he could give it to a museum or his descendants. So years passed and so did the old pilot, and apparently one of his daughters was given the duty of handling the box of priceless items. She handled them alright, all the way to the garbage can where they were never seen again.
Words cannot describe how much disrespect for history was told to me in that one story. But unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about it, and now in this day and age what is keeping history. We live in a day and age where we strive to make sure everything is recycleable. Now our current history is limited by where we spread it to. We need some sort of meathod that is not easily erasable to record our history. How will our descendants remember our history if there is way to remember it?
