And how many successful people who aren't "stars" go around in lace and corsets, or PVC, or fishnets?
Oh yeah. None. It's not professional.

Anyways, just my $.02.
Goth music being soothing is completely an opinion, and if you're talking about actual goth music, i.e. gothrock or deathrock, I'd say that while it is possible for you to find that soothing, most people wouldn't. It's no more soothing on average than rap music would be.

What's more, most goth rock and deathrock I've listened to is not deep by any means. In fact, a lot of it is centered around repetitive lyrics that are usually pretty simple, if not plain asinine. I'm not saying it's not fun to listen to, but it's not "deep."

I have to agree with that, I don't find most goth stuff to be deep at all, most of it is quite tounge in cheek and generaly just fun or silly.
That's always been my take on it anyway.

It is if you're a rock star, which of course was the exception I provided for rappers, was it not?

Hell, if you're a star, you can go on stage in just your underwear, and be praised for it [if you have a good enough body, that is].

Did I not say it was my opinion? O.o If I didn't I certainly meant to.

Looking at the lyrics, some seem at least a bit deeper than making money and sleeping with as many..er...prostitutes as one can.

Violence, economic struggle and lack of a good education are not reserved for minority groups such as blacks or latinos, just as a Ph.D degree isn't denied to them. Do you think all whites have it well-off? You really think no caucasians struggle and end up living in the ghetto, learning from their environment which just may happen to include mostly blacks? You're a fucking winner.
Are YOU fucking serious? I'm sorry, but I can't address every god damned exception to the rule. Did I say there couldn't be poor whites? Did I say there can't be rich blacks? No, I didn't. I didn't say that anywhere. But the truth of the matter is that the majority of this nation is white, and the percentage of poor people made up by the black and latino communities is disproportionately large.

White people didn't invent rap, but they sure as shit buy Yin-Yang Twins CDs.

Where the fuck do you get off using this accusatory tone? Did you even READ my post? Fuck you, you illiterate wretch.

Race isn't bullshit. You're fucking delusional if you say it doesn't matter. The sad truth is that it DOES matter. It's not right, but that's the way it is.

Also, comparing Dillinger and Capone to modern "gangstas" is completely inappropriate. Apples to fucking asteroids, they come from different times and work in completely different ways. We're discussing the idea of "gangsta", the fashion, music and attitudes held therein. You can't just say "Oh, they were all criminals, therefore they are all the same animal." Doesn't work that way. Lots of adherents to "gangsta" style aren't real gangsters, just like not all adherents to the unwritten "gothic" style guidelines are satanic, spell-casting loonies. Some are, most aren't.

To the clothing thing--yeah, that's my point. Neither style is really accepted in the professional world, so that's not a point to make.

To the clothing...no you didn't say it was your opinion, you just made a declarative statement.
And there is TONS of rap music that is deep. That's just not usually what's popular, because the main people buying rap CDs don't want to hear about how to deal with a hard life, or feelings, or something, they want corruption and nonsense.

My whole point is...don't judge someone else's culture, especially when your own clearly has flaws, and you know next to nothing about the culture you're judging.

[Augh, this flippin' computer..gah..]

Actually, you -can- scale Goth fashion down to being professional. In fact, most of my Goth clothing is geared towards Goth professional; it's a bit more understated than club wear, but acceptable.

Oh dearie me! Have I offended a rap fan by saying that I find it irritating? Of course that's opinion my lovely, one born out of having to listen to car-shaking rap plummeting down the road to the point where I can't even understand the words. And usually, the car isn't exactly going to win Motortrend's Car of the Year award, if you get my drift.

You -are- right in that there is -some- rap music that is deep; I'm a big fan of a lot of rap music that is associated with Adult Swim or The Gorillaz myself...but most of what's blasting down the road is -not- the deep kind, and -that's- the kind I have a beef with. [I would think that that's obvious.]

I also have a beef with country music and with yell-in-yo'-face metal, but those are other rants for other times.

As for fashion, like I said earlier...I do NOT want to know what kind of boxers -any- strangers wear. I just...don't. Augh, so awful. >_<

[If you need further justification for why I feel the way I do, I grew up in Alabama, in a small town where there are pretty much only two kinds of people: Angry white folks and angry black folks. I'd be glad to take you on a tour of my hometown some day, and you can view the Void itself, if you like..]

Can we put this to sleep now? This is just devolving into some of the humiliating ignorance and elitism I've ever seen on any message board.

Please. Some of you are just embarrassing yourselves and I know that that this is a goth board, hence the elitism but that's no excuse.

I am perfectly content with that. The best way to let a thread die, however, is to not post in it.

I will not change my opinion on a music genre/fashion trend simply because someone somewhere mistakingly thinks I'm being unfair or...dare I say it...mean to something that I suppsedly 'just don't understand'.
