5.5 gal is a bare minimum for a betta, but should be fine if it's filtered and heated. If you want guppies as well, then have a community of all males only in the ten gallon. Otherwise the expected breeding extravaganza will occur, and you will end up with hundreds of the little buggers, and nowhere to put them.
If you want no guppies at all, then put the Betta in the ten gallon with about 3 Otocinclus for company if you want a few more fish ( but nothing else at all ) . Make sure the tank is well planted with live plants. Elodia is ridiculously easy to grow. Java moss is also very nice, and can survive well in lower light ( but the better your light the better your plants will grow )
IMO the ten gallon for the Betta and possible Otos is the best setup. Personally I wouldn't keep a Betta in anything less than ten. But 5.5 is do-able in an emergency or swift rescue.
Basically, the bigger the tank, the easier the water is to keep stable in terms of chemistry, because the wastes are more diluted and take longer to build up. A 5.5 would need a 25-30% water change every 3 days or so. A ten would need doing only once a week with a good filter.

Thank you, dear Honey. I've kept Bettas with guppies before, but I shan't do it again
Would corydoras be okay, instead of otos? I'm rather fond of corys..
I want a red crowntail betta, named Doctor Jeep. Depending on how much Honey knows about bettas, only she would find this funny. Unless you people go research it.
I think I might just clean my 20 gal, and get some platys, too. I miss having fish.

It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, but the general consensus is that it isn't a great idea at all. The long bright fins are just too tempting. Better to err on the safe side than risk the guppies.
Corys can only go in the 20 gallon. They like to be in groups of six at least ( which is why I will be getting 3 more ) and despite being small, they do like to rove about in a gaggle grubbing for food, and need a fair bit of space to do it.
Heh, Dr Jeep is a VERY fitting name! But you'll find it cheaper and easier to get one in a petstore than go travelling you know Plus petstores treat them hideously, so it would be nice to save at least one from certain death in a cup
4 Platys and 6 cories would be very good in a 20 gal. And since platys are fairly innocuous you could easily put the Betta in there too. WAY better than a 5 gallon.
A good internal filter ( I hear Whispers and Aquaclears are quite good ) and some plants would be great for them. A sand substrate is good for live plants, and better for the corys because of their delicate barbels.
Remember, you must cycle your filter for a month before adding a single fish.

I decided to come home for a little bit, just to get out of Cody for awhile. So, while I was at the parental unit's house this morning, the satellite guy shows up to install their internet dish, and get it all hooked up. After running into town, finding the last remaining wireless router in the store, beating my head on a desk for an hour getting it set up, I can now tell one, and all, that we have moved from the dark ages in rural Montana, and can converse now with amazing speed! Or, I can use this most amazing of technologies to get on here, but that is ok, too, right?

DOWN THE MEKONG!
I will rescue dear Dr. Jeep from the pet store.
I used to have a Whisper, and it was WONDERFUL. WAIT! I was on a fish supply site just now, and they have a HEATER that goes IN THE FILTER! WOEZA!
I am SO going to set up my 20 gal again. I need to get a hood, though.. damn.. thouse tend to get pricey. Perhaps a canopy instead.. *ponders*
Don't worry; I've ALWAYS preferred sand. It's much easier to siphon..
What are your thoughts on live/frozen food as opposed to pellets or flakes? I've always liked them much better.

Congrats guys, due to the Vyvian issue, I'm getting off of gnet for a while. You fuckers treat him like you treat Signe and Mindless, though he did nothing to deserve it. Farewell for now, hopefully you'll learn how to treat people better, or treat them badly when they've asked for it. But I may as well articulate my thoughts. Mollymac, why try to manipulate people by making it sound as if they NEED to forget him? You could've said you didn't like him and left it at that. That was going too far. Forget it, I don't even feel like arguing anymore. Just know you are a bunch of asshats.

Me, I'm sold , down the Mekong
meanwhile, in the Sheraton,
Doctor Jeep plays on and on and on...
Filkter inside the heater? Is that Juwel model? Their supposed to be quite good.
I love live foods. Best thing for fish, FAR more natural. I do like the convenience of flake and pellet though, and algae wafers are a godsend for bottomfeeders. I've never used frozen foods. Not sure why.

The SPCA had a donation drive today on campus and they had the most adorable little kitties, there were two of them and they were only four weeks old. I got to hold the little boy (they had you wash up if you wanted to hold one of them) and he was so tiny and such a sweetheart, his purring made his whole body vibrate, sooooo adorable ^.^

Combine a dusty old library, thousands of books, horrid, evil, blood-sucking allergies, and a miserable Tismine you will make. I have had to flee from my wonderful books and take refuge in the sterile computer room...oh, the woe I have had.
Plus, I crying tears of black! (Ie- my eyes are watering so badly the tears are smearing my waterproof, thick black eyeliner.)
Moohahaha.
Yay for stereotypes.

I believe it was a Tetra model, and VERY cool.
Frozen foods were live, then freezed
They come in little cubes, so they are about as easy as pellets, with all the benefits of live. I LOVED the spirulina wafers, and so did my old Cory.
Bleedingheart, I will miss you. I shall tell Vyvian you said hello, if I ever get a hold of his mother.

Bye BleedingHeart, you shall be missed, and please give my fond regards to Vyv. He doesn't answer my messenger chats anymore, but I don't know why.
Noumi: You lucky girl! Congratulations. And all who are in love are fools my dear, myself included.
