| Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Well, you were previously whining about how SoD was apparantly hurting you, though this is an internet forum and it shouldn't matter anyway. If you get upset over this stuff, I find it hard to believe you'll successfully get through life.

In reference to the OP: the term "Gothic rockers" was first used by the media to describe fans of certain 'dark' bands in the early and mid-80s [i. e., Sisters of Mercy, the Cure, etc. and so on.] Those bands weren't trying to be 'goth'; they were just doing what they wanted to do, and the media came up with the term. [Which is pretty ironic, considering that most Goths these days despise the way media portrays them.]
In reference to taking the Internet too seriously: You gotta chill, girl; if folks on this forum get on your nerves that badly, you have a few options:
-- Put them on ignore. That way, you won't have to see their posts.
-- Take a break from the forum.
-- Take a break from the Internet.
-- Change your sig. Seriously, that's just asking for trouble, and makes you look like you enjoy being 'hurt'. Do you have a persecution complex, where you enjoy others 'hurting' you? If not, do things to keep these folks away from you, not draw negative comments towards you..
Seriously, if you are sensitive enough to where someone making an off-handed comment on the 'Net is enough to 'hurt' you, then I think you need to take a break and live in the real world for a little while.
And that's all I got to say about that.

To my understanding and what I've noticed to be pretty common in goth rock is this:
Jangly almost surfer-rock type guitars. (surf's up dude)
If not the above mentioned, then it would be heavily bass driven and still kinda surferish sounding or funky.
Tribal drum beats. Tribal as all hell.
Sometimes contains a keyboardist that plays a lot of the atmosphere synth.
A dark aesthetic that influences darker lyrics and a bit of a glam aesthetic as well.
While there's a difference between Sex Gang Children and The Horrors, you can tell that they both sound pretty similar in style, but one happens to be more goth rock and the other happens to be surfer punk.
Some goth rock artists up the atmosphere and dark aesthetic to such a point that it will sound nothing much like punk in the least. See Charlotte Sometimes by The Cure.
Also take note that many goth rock artists are not contrived in the beginning, so you also have a lot of experimentation going on.
If anyone knows of anything else that could be added or corrected, feel free to clarify. This is just what I've observed as of late.

It doesn't really matter. "Genres" are just a method of quickly describing a certain sound. A lot of bands hate genre labels because it comes off like a "dumbing down" of the band's overall aesthetic. Also, whenever a band becomes popular in the goth scene, that tends to be the only audience they'll ever have, no matter how much they move away from it. I personally don't have a problem with it.

You're the only person besides myself that has noticed a surf feel to it, but this mainly applies to death rock or some of the first-wave stuff. Which, between the first and second wave, there's quite a difference. The first wave stuff is basically dark post-punk, influenced by funk, glam, and punk, whereas the second wave "gothic rock" is more rock influenced obviously. But it uses a lot of arpeggio instead, broken or "swirling" guitar chords. The bass is more at the forefront with first-wave, whereas second-wave really lets the guitar show off. Compare, for example, Bauhaus in the first-wave, and The Sisters of Mercy in the second wave. :B

I don't know, I guess I'd say that non-posey goth music is music which is esteemed by goths with an IQ of at least 100 or more. I dislike much of it personally (except for Joy Division, who fucking own, and The Cure are okay, if nothing special). But I can hear, objectively, that Bauhaus &c. have better lyrics than MCR, even if it's not mah thing.
Some things ARE simply better (more accomplished, more indicative of intelligence in their making, more effective in achieving the mood / tone they set out to make) than others. I totally believe this. People who say "well that;s just your opinion" are usually unable to defend their crappy tastes from an artistic point of view.
