Graveyards

I heard that some Goths like to go to graveyards and relax with friends,
write poetry, and admire the beautiful stone sculptures and tombstones.
It sounds like a nice peaceful way to spend an afternoon or weekend.

I am wondering if anyone else has done this or has heard of it.

I've done it. It's certainly not unheard of.

I would, if they all weren't so bloody far away. Certainly not walkable, and the closest one is in a really sketchy part of town.

I want to make my own tombstone, and then, when I die, get buried in a dark, old forgotten cemetery that no one's been buried in for at least 50 years - the kind that's all overgrown with moss and lichen and conifers and you have to drive down a gravel road to get to. I love that kind of cemetery.

Near where I live there is this church with really old concret headstones a tombs. I love how they look weathered and have ivy growng up them.
Some churches I've been past I've noticed that the really old graves are closer to the entrance and have the sculptures as the headstone. I love these kind of headstones. They make the grave yard look intresting.
Nowwer days you get the simple marble headstones that all look the same.
I'm also thinking about starting one of them savings things so I can get money ready for my own funeral. 'Cause the head stone I want will probably cost alot of money and I know my family will have enough bills to pay as it is, so if I cover the costs while I still can it will be easy for them in the future.
You know? Think ahead and stuff.
I might custom make my head stone/sculpture and store it for when I die.

So true. In many areas around where I live, law regulates headstones and scultpures. In some cemetaries you aren't allowed to have them at all, and the ones who do allow them regulate what you can put on them. We weren't even allowed to put the pentacle or ANYTHING pertaining to wicca on them until last year.

There are so few old graveyards left now. Finding a nice, old, quite cemetary is like trying to find an open field of unclaimed land in the city.

I know this itopic is about going to graveyards. But you really got me thinking about my own grave stone now.
Im now thinking of what ever I have I want this
http://www.intexpacific.com/images/50472_laying.jpg
To be placed somewhere over my resting place.
I want this because I honestly cant sleep peacefully without my cat sleeping next to me.
I know she will be long dead before I die. But still..

That is adorable! And it has a lot of symbolism as well.

I really with there were more cemetaries. Oooo! And Moseleums (or however you spell it) are awesome too! I used to be terrified of them as a child, but have come to admire them.

I love cemeteries and graveyards. I travel across the United States photographing cemeteries in every city and town I visit. I have thousands of photographs, but for brevity here are just a few that I have taken personally:

This is my first self portrait in front of my favorite mausoleum, the Ives family mausoleum in Cedar Rapids:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ds/ZoomBob.jpg

An excllent gothic version stone mausoleum:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r.../Sinclair1.jpg

and a closeup of the beautiful gate and gothic lettering of the family name:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r.../Sinclair2.jpg

Tombstones over 100 years old:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...oss-marker.jpg

Beautiful columns on this one:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/DowsMaus.jpg

Some families continue to honor the memory of their ancestors. This mausoleum is over one hundred years old yet had fresh flowers on the gate:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ouglasMaus.jpg

Here I am standing on the huge Greene family tombstone:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...TakeAStand.jpg

An appropriately named family tombstone:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...aves007_22.jpg

Entrance to a unique cemetery:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...emetery017.jpg

And my favorite mausoleum inside it:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...emetery028.jpg

A Hawaiian cemetery:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ii-2007043.jpg

And fresh grave within:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ii-2007048.jpg

As well as beautiful Japanese grave markers (yes that is me in front sporting a "beach goth" look):

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ii-2007045.jpg

And I have many many others. I love them, and hope to someday be interred in a beautiful stone mausoleum.

Yep, I've done that. ^^ It's very peaceful, and no one will bother you, unlike at the park where there's a bunch of kids screaming and running around, and random people playing frisbee just a wee bit too close for comfort. :/

True. But still, on rare occasions there tends to be those emotional ladies who are bawling over their loved ones so loud that it peirces the lovely quiet that so many long for in cemetaries.

Huh. Never had that happen to me. O.o..

If there's a funeral or something going on, I make sure I'm far enough away to where we don't disturb each other.

It's happened to me a few times. Usually it's just some old lady mourning her husband who died years ago. I go to cemetaries to relax, meditate and usually be alone, and certain sounds tend to disrupt that.

On a seperate note, pet cemetaries depress me.

*shivers*

I don't think that after watching the movie by Stephen King, I could ever go into one. x_x;;;

Regular cemetary in the daytime = fine. But any other kind, or at night, and no...not okay.

Yeah. He pretty much ruined my life! Half the fears I have was caused by him. The other half were because of my mother lol.

Would it be possible to build/own/creat a cemetary? It sees like a nice business to go into. People are always dying, so if you have a good location and enough land, you probably won't run out of customers lol.

I wanted to start a business as a mortician a while back, but I realised that would be too much work indoors and not enough outside in the rolling fields of dead stuffs.

Everywhere will end up being a grave yard eventually.
1, We will run out of available land for church grave yards, this will cause them to make ppl be cremated to save space. Also (which I think some places have already done) dig 12ft to bury two ppl in there instead of just one (my grandads is 12ft because me aunty wants to be buried with him) and set hight and width restrictions.
2, The world will be nuked so everything becomes dead.

That's why I want to make my own. I'll have to get better at sculpture first, though.
I hope someone plants ivy by my grave... And/or a library rose,* or one that smells just as good.

*They grow these spectacular roses outside the library back home, and they smell like spice. I don't know the name, but they're fuchsia.
