My mother :(

My mother is ill . I've just had to pick her up off the toilet floor. She went in there to be sick, and after a few minutes I said I'd get the bus to work. In reply I heard her let out this really horrible groan/moan, and she kept on doing it, so I ran in and she was just slumped on the floor, her eyes were rolled back in her head, and her arms and legs were twitching, all the while this horrible groaning I grabbed her and sat her up because she was slipping sideways, and still groaning. I was shouting to her but she couldn't hear me , and she was cold . She stopped groaning after a couple more minutes, and her breathing went a bit funny, but she seemed more concious, and started to freak out a bit when I said I'd ring an ambulance. I didn't want her to have an asthma or angina attack ( she suffers both ) , because she is afraid they would give her a needle ( she has a severe phobia of them, she won't even pick up a drawing pin ) . So I sat there with her on the floor for a while until she felt a little better and could begin to stand.

I half carried her into the living room, and she felt better when she lay on the sofa. I made her have some water, and I asked her if she heard me shouting to her on the toilet floor. She said no, so for all her groaning she must have been unconcious. She had this once before, when she had a bad reaction to some painkillers the doctor prescribed. I asked if she'd taken anything at all today and she say's she hasn't. So this worries me even more. I told her I'm not going to work today, and she told me to go. But I've put my foot down and said no, because she might go like that again and if I go, there will be no one to help her because my dad is also at work. I seriously thought she was dying on that floor.

If she's no better by this afternoon I'm calling the doctor out. I've never learned to drive , and she certainly can't drive herself there in her state. She's had some water and is sleeping now so I won't disturb her. I've never been so frightened in my life.

Sorry, I had to tell someone.

Stay vigilant. Keep an eye on her breathing and such. Do you know CPR, just in case?

I know some basics. But she's in the living room right by the phone so if she's bad again I can call an ambulance quicksharp wether she like it or not.

Ok she's woken up now. She feels better and can walk. She's had a cup of tea and we're going to the doctors at 12.

I'm glad you're taking her to the Dr. Its at times like this that you need to override what your mum says for her own health and safety.

I hope she's okay and you're in my thoughts ((hugs)). I understand what its like to look after a parent (I'm living with my father as his carer). The worry that ensues and the stress.

Sweetie, you did the right thing by taking your mom to the doctor. DON'T LISTEN TO HER PROTESTS! You had a genuine medical emergency on your hands and you handled it admirably. (As I have posted before, I'm an ex-Army medic and I work in a hospital, so I can qualify that). I, too, am an asthmatic with a fear of needles. Believe me, since medics are the worst people about taking our own advice, I, too, hate going to the doctor, but I had a similar attack like that around my own daugter and I won't forget it. The look on my daughter's face when I came to was enough to give me my 'wake-up' call). Just take your mom to the doctor when you need to, and tell her to 'do it for you, if not for herself.' And, please, keep us posted.

I will be learning after I've been to Whitby. But it's quite expensive to learn and I have no idea how I will afford a car when I'm done :/ I regret not learning when I was 17.

Ok we're back from the doctors. He couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. But she reckons, thinking back on it, that she may have had a reaction to some window cleaner she used on Sunday.

She has to go back and see him in a couple of weeks to see how she's doing.

Hmmm...Has she ever been tested for diabetes/hypoglycemia? What you described sounds A LOT like what used to happen to me before I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. Ask her what she ate prior to what happened.

Did the window cleaner she used have ammonia in it? Is there anyway it could have came into contact with bleach?

Here's a video on CPR. It's a bit corny. http://youtube.com/watch?v=g-A1ZzEsSaE&feature=related
I know a recent publication just came out that states that non health care workers don't have to do the breathing, that the compressions (30 at a time, check pulse afterwards) are the most important to focus on.

I hope your mother feels better, too. You're a good daughter.

If I were you, I'd try another doctor for a second opinion. It doesn't hurt to be overly cautious in such a situation. Especially considering the quality of the health service in the UK.

I hope that it wasn't anything serious and that everything turns out fine, but don't take any chances. You are in my thoughts and if there is anything I can do, just ask.

It sounds like your mother may be diabedic. That's exactly how my father would react when his blood sugar would drop really low.

Has she been tested for diabetes?

No I don't think she has. BUT:

If Diabetes is tested by blood then it can't be done.

She absolutely needle phobic . I mean really severe . She can't pick up a pin or wear a brooch. She can't grow roses because of the thorns , or have any sort of spiked plant in the house or garden. She can't even watch someone have a needle on tv.

She is unable to go into the nurses station to be treated at the doctors, because there are needles in the cupboards.

A blood test is required to diagnose diabetes but I have heard that they can do a urine analysis and if she is diabetic there is a good chance that there will be glucose in her urine.

Also I have heard that there are some tings which help keep your blood sugar stable (the only one I can think of at the moment is cranberries I'll go look for a link to more) so even if she hasn't been tested she may want to try incorporating some of those things into her diet as they may help and there is not rick of them doing any harm if she isn't diabetic. I do hope she will be all right.

Okay so a quick search only found links for those who have been diagnosed and are focused more on what to eat when your blood sugar dips.

But I did talk to Jake's dad, who is a 100% diet controlled diabetic, and he said the things that help most are: making sure every meal is balanced (so don't have a carb heavy breakfast and protein heavy dinner), eating four or five meals a day instead of just three, making sure your diet has lots of olive oil, cutting down on your intake of caffeine (1-2 cups of black tea or coffee is fine but try to avoid more than that), cutting back alcohol consumption, and trading simple carbs for more complex ones (trade white bread for whole wheat and things like that). I hope that is at least somewhat helpful

Fuck. I'm so sorry... I always felt this heavy, hollow feeling in my stomach whenever my mother was ill... I hope everything is okay... In the future, if I were you, if that happens again, I'd just take her to the hospital straight away. I know a girl who had a similar reaction and she just wanted to be let alone to sleep, but her boyfriend just picked her up and brought her to the hospital against her will. Turns out, she would've been dead within the hour if she had been allowed to just sleep like she wanted. Unfortunately, any time I've ever gone to the hospital, all I've gotten is "well, we're not sure what's wrong with you, but here's a $700 bill". I figure better safe than sorry though.
