The Mist

Some hated the ending, but I thought it was perfect to the point of saying outloud to myself "That's just fucked up".

I remember getting this story as an audio book when I was a kid and never read the print version. the audio book was made with "3d sound" so it sounded as if you were in the story if you used headphones and I have to say this is one of the best movie translations of a Stephen King story I have seen.

I agree, I went to see this with a few friends of mine when we could have seen Across The Universe. When that tentacle thing came out from under the garage door we were laughing.

Just saw it. It was ridiculously good and faithful to the book, until the last ten minutes. Damn them for ruining the end of the book like that. Damn them.

I'm suprised to see that so many people actually liked the movie. I absolutely hated it.

Did most of you read the book/hear the audio book before the movie came out?

I'd read the short story a long, long time ago. I really liked it, due to the "Lovecraftian King" feel. Unlike most of King's work, it wasn't a "plot plot creepy scene plot ominous latin chanting" (And yes, I just horribly misrepresented King. Sue me. Not really. I'm actually a huge King fan); this is an "hmm... that's kind of wei- AAAAAHHHHHHH" story.

I was realy suprised as to how true to the original story this movie was, while being good in it's own right. I thought the cast was good, though I was a little confused at how they cast larger names for some smaller parts and yet the larger parts were by unknowns. It was good, just a little unusual and makes me wonder if they wasted some money doing it that way.

I thought that the effects were good, though the use of the spider-thread was a little odd. They basically used good special effects to recreate scenes that have done multiple times using silly string from a can. Again, it makes me wonder if the accountant was asleep. The large "mantid thing" was the only effect that I wasn't really pleased with. Not because you don't really get to see it, but because when it did come close enough to not be obscured there wasn't really any additional detail to see. Kinda seemed that they created the "blured out" look partially by just not putting any detail on the CGI model.

All around I thought it was good. The ending was different, but the original story didn't have an ending and really isn't something that you can do with a major movie nowadays. I'd give it a low 7 out of 10.

I too read the book. I too also thought they shouldn't have screwed with the ending. I mean, the ending they put there doesn't mesh with the storyline at all. It defeats the overall theme.

Yeah, but can you picture a studio kicking up that much money for a movie that ends with "and they keep driving"? The ending was one of the reasons it was a short story instead of a full novel. It's all fine and good to put an ending like that in a short story, but not full stories or major production movies. Endings like that tend to piss off too many people to be reccomended .

Back in the old days we used to have this thing called 'imagination'. It was really neat. A movie could end somewhat without an ending and the crowd would churn out into the night after seeing the movie and the conversations would usually be what people thought would happen next, and were in general immensely interesting to listen in to.

Nowadays everyone needs to be spoonfed with complete endings etc. Preferably in big letters.

I totally agree. But in the same sense, I personally was a little bit irked with the original story because it was fantastic but also (a) said almost nothing aobut the cause other than rampant in-character speculation (b) the ending was a cliffhanger just when it was getting good. When I read a story, I'm generally reading it for the story; I'm not reading it specifically for the flights of fancy that I can diverge from it (though that is a plus) and there is a limit to the point of where "using your imagination" ends and "not really having a clue about really good parts you know nothing about" starts.

I would have been equally fine with images of them driving off into the distance as the main character over-voiced a bit about them sloowly traveling and just tryng to stay alive and find out what had happened. But for a movie (which I intend to get on DVD eventually) I'd like something a little more solid than the original ending.

Oh, and speaking of driving off: at the end when they're on the highway and going under the signs, there is no actual location like that on the Maine highway, or any similarly large roads that it could have been (there are only a small handful of divided highways like that in the state, which could be counted on my fingers and I know them all pretty well). That kind of dissapointed me, as it would have only been a minor tweak to have the signs match up with ones that actually exist.

I read the story a few months before they announced that they were making a movie, I believe. My mom found the book it was in and told me that I absolutely had to read it, and it remains one of my favorite King stories.

I was only a tad disappointed in the ending, seeing as the rest of the movie seemed to be true to the story, almost word-for-word in areas, and then they went and changed the ending. I thought the creatures were excellent, just the way I pictured a lot of them, and a lot of the characters seemed perfect too. It just bugged me that they just had to put an ending to the story. I kind of liked the fact that you never knew if they made it, if they died... the rest was pretty good though. Not as beyond the story as 1408.

Yeah, I had "heard" the audio book done in a 3d form so when you used headphones and closed your eyes it sounded like you were there. I thought it fit the book pretty well and the ending, to me, was better just for the irony factor.

I did not read the topic because the movie hasn't been out in my country yet, but I think the short tale The Mist is one of the best things Stephen King has ever written... And I trust Frank Darabont. I'm hoping for a great movie.

I haven't read the novel yet, but I've seen the movie. It truly is a good movie but there were a few things that did piss me off apart from the ending.

Like with that lady, preaching how it's the end of the world and how judgement is falling upon them, she ends up getting a cult of her own and the people in it, worship her as their elder or something. And I disliked her from the getgo. I was really glad when she got shot because she was so annoying.

The ending was really messed up. I felt bad for the father killing his own son. Then again, it was hard for him to do anything especially in that scenario where it seems there's no other way out.
