Well, a straight answer is really boring, but okay. Usually when someone says something negative about me, I've managed to provoke them somehow, and people who respond to me in that way tend to be pretty amusing to berate. So, I antagonize them further, they respond, and great revelry ensues.
For instance, say someone called me ugly, and I, thinking that person would recognize an obvious joke and laugh it off, called him or her a 'jealous liar'. Much to my surprise, the person is stupid and doesn't understand, so he or she replies "HAY YOU JERK HOW DARE YOU", even after I'd explained my comments as a joke. I would then probably continue my pretense of being an arrogant asshole who cannot imagine that anyone would ever think me ugly, infuriating the individual in question into making more angry posts, each one stupider than the last, screaming things like ("YOU ARE UGLY I SWEARRRRRR").
That I am able to do this is because in reality I do not care what strangers on the internet think about me- if I did, I would probably ask things like "BUT TUMOR WHY AM I UGLY HOW CAN I CHANGE?" or simply cry.
You are the second person to describe posting to a message board as 'going to great lengths' to respond to people who criticize me, with which association I don't exactly agree, but regardless I don't reply to such criticisms in the hopes that their posters will change their minds and like me. I do it for my own gratification. It's entertaining for me.

Right there. If you call someone something like that, whether you're joking or not, it's not often that the person being called the something will laugh. Indeed, it's more likely to cause friction, to say the least. Someone as intelligent as you claim to be should know this. Though, I suppose, if you have absolutely no social experience whatsoever, you could be excused on the grounds of your ignorance in such matters. Otherwise, you knew exactly what kind of reaction you'd most likely get. So basically, that puts the lie to most of what you said.
