Yeah, the high school that my oldest is going to next year I jokingly refer to as Emo High. During lunchtime, the Port of Subs across the street becomes Port of Emos. It's fun to drive through the parking lot in my minivan with my windows down blasting AFI. It seems to be the style at least in our neighborhood, emos or wannabe mallgoths. It's why my daughter is scrambling to change her look so she doesn't get confused with them next year, she wants to change her current all-black wardrobe to steampunk or pirate punk.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that a kid commits suicide, if they had dyed black hair combed over the side of their face, listened to MCR, wrote poetry, and wore guyliner, people are going to shake their heads and spout nonsense about this "dangerous new emo cult." When in reality there's probably about the same depression and suicide ratio to the "normal" kids, those whom my mom's suicide group grieved over - the ones who wear bright colors, listen to Rihanna or whatever crap they listen to these days, and wouldn't think about cracking open a poetry book. But the ones who get labeled as more likely to be depressed, self-harm, or kill themselves are those who are different, especially shockingly so. I remember when it was the goths in the 80's who got that kind of negative attention. My grandparents gave me no end of grief over it, thought I needed therapy.

I should have been in bed hours ago, so I hope I'm making sense.

I would encourage DIY and I bet you do for your daughter. She reminds me of me when I was a teen. Trying desperately to not be part of the fold.

She is really into DIY now, and she's very excited that nobody else in town seems to be into steampunk. I won a few lots of gears on Ebay for her birthday. I kid around with her about her shoes, call them her emo shoes, but I have a pair just like them so I guess I'm just as nerdy.

This is honestly fucked up. I can understand suicide for depression (though it is still a bad idea) but I mean, for a fucking cult or whatever is just screwed. This article is SO narrow minded and stereotyped...

This is what happens when you create a culture of victimhood, and validate whiny kids by pandering to their drama instead of cuffing them around the head and telling them to get the fuck over it.

If she ACTUALLY killed herself over not being allowed to stay over at a friend's, and there isn't any more to it than we're being told, then GOOD. "We lost a moron, the world feels a little lighter!" [dance]

I think its offensive they have hijacked the goth sub-culture and mixed it with emo to produce this tripe. We had the market cornered on dark clothing and suicide until they mixed that shite mainstream music into it and called it 'emo'.

Sternn, people have been trying to sell the goth thing for years over equally silly shit. Must we forget the millions of goths out there that think Cradle Of Filth is just oh so goth? I'm still of the mind that goth is basically the marketing tool used to sell identity and products to "tortured" teens.

This article is nothing more than a writer's propaganda for instilling fear in the minds of the naive through the use of incorrect data, lies & fear mongering.

The best part is the black parade thing. Especially considering, "Welcome to the Black Parade" By My Chemical Romance is about perseverance and carrying on with life regardless of hardships...

I wouldn't go that far. If anything, the only thing one could really criticize this author for would be making contemporary emo out to be anything more than a joke.

Much like KontanKarite said, emo is more of the same; a marketing tool for teenagers with identity crisis'. I'm sorry, but even though this girl killed herself, I find this all laughable in context. Emo is something to be appalled of because it causes teenagers to kill themselves? I thought it was the lack of an individual identity it causes by usurping any sense of self with a fashionable faux hive-mind mentality. That might just be me, though.

The traditional method for writing any article for the Daily HateMail is this
"Blahblahblah FEAR THIS blahblahblah".
It doesn't matter what it's being written about, but there must always be something or someone to point the blame at so that people have something to hate. Hate unites people in a way that general community spirit doesn't, sadly, and hate and fear cause people to feel like they need information, and thus continue buying the paper.

Sounds like something like this:

Hai! I has computer. I master journalist. Read and behold mah powers. Kthnxbai!

I want to share with you a few of the tentative conclusions I've reached regarding Hamsters's litanies. And I stress the word "tentative," because the subject of what motivates Hamsters is tricky and complex. Let's review the errors in Hamsters's statements in order. First, Hamsters turns its back on those who have been the most loyal to it. As something that enjoys brandishing words like "physicophilosophical" and "unproportionableness" as a smoke screen to hide its nostrums' inherent paradoxes, Hamsters must indubitably be at a loss when someone presents a logical counterargument to its morally questionable, brain-damaged strictures. To most people, the list of Hamsters's exploitative ideals reads like a comic strip but its mottos are actually taken seriously by its bedfellows. No one has a higher opinion of Hamsters than I, and I think Hamsters's an unregenerate, prudish bludger.

The whole premise of Hamsters's prophecies is false, and its arguments are specious at best. The virus of plagiarism took control of our country's political life long ago. Now, thanks to Hamsters's criticisms, that virus will continue to spread until no one can recall that I am reminded of the quote, "All five of my senses indicate that you should never allow a day to go by in which you do not bring this fundamental truth to at least one new person." This comment is not as delusional as it seems because I need your help if I'm ever to unmask Hamsters's true face and intentions in regard to charlatanism and encourage others to do the same. "But I'm only one person," you might protest. "What difference can I make?" The answer is: a lot more than you think. You see, Hamsters has been fairly successful in its efforts to paralyze any serious or firm decision and thereby become responsible for the weak and half-hearted execution of even the most necessary measures. That just goes to show what can be done with a little greed, a complete lack of scruples, and the help of a bunch of cuckoo imprudent-types.

Hamsters wants to be the one who determines what information we have access to. Yet it is also a big proponent of a particularly warped form of scapegoatism. Do you see something wrong with that picture? What I see is that the worst kinds of churlish showboaters there are often take earthworms or similar small animals and impale them on a pin to enjoy watching them twist and writhe as they slowly die. Similarly, Hamsters enjoys watching respectable people twist and writhe whenever it threatens to present a false image to the world by hiding unpleasant but vitally important realities about its bons mots. What Hamsters does in private is none of my business. But when it tries to control your bank account, your employment, your personal safety, and your mind, I object. In closing, we must work together to help you reflect and reexamine your views on Hamsters. Together, we can make a difference. Forever and always.
