I live in Southern Ontario, and everyone's pretty good about things. haha, I admit, the nearer to Quebec you get the worse the driving is... or so I've noticed. No offence Quebeckers.

Taxes are a bit higher and winters COLD, but it's pretty here and I find the people are always very helpful... one lady saved me from getting on the wrong train haha.

As to Alberta being where the money is... to a point. But one reason the jobs pay so high is because the cost of living has become so high there.
I think the best places to live are the smaller ones near big cities. Then you can have scenery but be near to everything. I live in a town like that.... although it's now one of the fastest-growing town in Canada

I was just about to say, "go look at a real estate site for Alberta. A vaguely decent house or an OK condo will cost you about 600 000$. Cost of living is insane there. My cousin lives in Calgary, and she's often giving me news of some outrageously priced living accommodations. The only affordable things in Alberta are either dumps or way out in the boonies.
The winters are also nasty there. It gets down to about -30 without the wind chill sometimes, and they're dry as fuck. My cousin always complains about her hands cracking and bleeding cuz they're so dry.

Having said that, though, the scenery is really nice - either prairie or Rockies - and the salaries are higher. Just be aware that you probably won't save up any more than you would elsewhere :P

If you like prairie, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are significantly cheaper than Alberta, though they're both growing. I think they're starting to find oil in Saskatchewan, so prices are going up there too. I think Saskatchewan is also more liberal than Alberta.

Ontario has the reputation for having the most assholes. It's also the most populated province in Canada. Northern Ontario has a lot of mosquitoes and black flies, so if you can't stand those, I probably wouldn't recommend it. It's also, naturally, colder up there. The scenery is really neat and almost ethereal though. Lots of poplars and tall pines, and some places that have recently had forest fires. The scenery around Lake Huron and Lake Superior, though, is bloody spectacular. At least travel to Northern Ontario, though. It's really worth it.
Southern Ontario gets Hot and sunny in the summer. It's not uncommon to have +30 degree (Celsius) days. I don't know much about many individual cities in it... Toronto is the biggest city, but has a reputation for considering itself as the centre of the Universe. It also, as someone has said, has the biggest goth scene. Don't expect to live in the suburbs and be able to commute downtown by car. Either live downtown (which is expensive) or take the GoTrain. Ottawa is full of public servants. It's got one overtly goth store, but there is a scene. There's no subway, but there are busses. They're also starting to build an above-ground commuter train, but it'll be pretty much useless for about 10 years yet. Kingston has almost no scene, but it does have a few goths and an online store that has a local office, so you can pick things up without paying shipping. Other than that, it's a university town of about 100 000 people. For how many normal people there are here, though, it's pretty good in the way of not being "AAAAHHH! A GOTH!" It's also snooty and is still miffed that it didn't get picked as the capital of Canada. I like it though. It's fair.

As for Quebec, don't bother with anywhere except Montreal if you don't know French. The only place I've been where I've seen worse driving than in Montreal is New York. It's a nice city though. Lots of good Italian restaurants, etc. They also have a whole complex of underground malls, which is pretty cool. It's good just for walking from place to place though, either to escape heat of summer or cold of winter.

BC, I think, is the Canadian equivalent of California. I have the impression that it's more relaxed, environmentally friendly, warm, and fairly expensive. I don't know if it's as expensive as Alberta, so you'd have to check that out.

The Maritimes vary. New Brunswick, based on the impression my friend gave me, was that it was a watered-down version of Alabama (most people in New Brunswick have one of three last names). Nova Scotia... I don't know. PEI is a tiny island, and I've heard good things about it. Newfoundland is fabulous for travel, but there's not much there in the way of living opportunities other than fishing, and even that is disappearing. St. John's is beautiful though. All the houses are painted bright colours. Spring is also a month late there. Lilacs bloom in May in Ontario, but when I went to Newfoundland at the very beginning of July, they were blooming there. It's really interesting.

The Territories are... cold and mosquitoey. I don't know much about them, but I've heard a lot of stories about people who go there and love it so much they never leave. You get caribou and dainty little alpine/tundra flowers up there. There are also musk oxen and polar bears.

600,000$ is a Waaaaay exaggerated isn't it? (Note to Non Canadians: these statements are totally false - do your research) And while I agree with most of what you said, the best place to be in Canada is where economic growth is and that's where the jobs are: Alberta - as Ontario struggles because there is too many candidates and not enough jobs, Alberta struggles to find people to fill an abundance of jobs. But, depending on what you want to do for a living, that's another story. In the arts such as music I know there is more support there than there ever was - again all due to this economic prospects and growth - this has never happened in Alberta before.

But you know what? Even if it did cost 600,000$ for a condo, who really cares? huh? As long as Alberta has a projected solid growth for the next 25-30+ years, in the future you'll be looking at that 600,000$ condo and laugh your ass off at how cheap it has become in 2040. LOL!

According to recent statistics, Toronto is #26 on the list of dangerous cities in Canada. Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg showed crime rates much higher than Toronto or Montreal. Torontonians do have a fear mentality though, and the statistics won't convince very many people to change thir minds whether they're judging the city from within or without. I personally think Toronto is a great city, and would live there without a second thought if that was where my career took me.

As for economy, Ontario is loosing ground in terms of manufacturing jobs because the automotive industry is slowing, but the jobs are more than being replaced by jobs in construction, public administration, and business. According to the Statistics, the unemployment rate in Alberta is sitting at about 3%, compared to Ontario's 6%. Economic theory states that in order to allow for retirees and students, ideal unemployment should range from 4% to 6% of population.

I haven't been to Alberta, so I can't speak from experience, but I have read articles in respected publications that have stressed the fact that while jobs are plentiful and wages are high, housing construction is unable to keep up with people moving to the region to fill the jobs, which is creating a serious housing shortage, and the province's infrastructure (water and sewer systems, hospitals, law enforcement, etc.) has been stretched nearly to the point of failure.

Torontonians do have a fear mentality though, and the statistics won't convince very many people to change thir minds whether they're judging the city from within or without. I personally think Toronto is a great city, and would live there without a second thought if that was where my career took me.

As for economy, Ontario is loosing ground in terms of manufacturing jobs because the automotive industry is slowing, but the jobs are more than being replaced by jobs in construction, public administration, and business. According to the Statistics, the unemployment rate in Alberta is sitting at about 3%, compared to Ontario's 6%. Economic theory states that in order to allow for retirees and students, ideal unemployment should range from 4% to 6% of population.

I haven't been to Alberta, so I can't speak from experience, but I have read articles in respected publications that have stressed the fact that while jobs are plentiful and wages are high, housing construction is unable to keep up with people moving to the region to fill the jobs, which is creating a serious housing shortage, and the province's infrastructure (water and sewer systems, hospitals, law enforcement, etc.) has been stretched nearly to the point of failure.

LMFAO! I don't know where you're getting those numbers from, but from someone who actually lives in Toronto (as opposed to someone who DREAMS to live in Toronto - I can't for the life in me imagine why anyone would want to) those figures are all wrong and totally misleading - no doubt a desperate plea for ppl to move to Toronto but don't buy into it - Toronto is a cess pool of filth and degeneration/de-evolution. Statistics don't even take into consideration the population size, and that there are MANY incidents that do NOT get reported through statistics, which are totally useless.

Your "economic theory" is useless...It only applies to the old economy of manufacturing which is becoming non-existent in Ontario. Believe you me, already there are bread/wheat/rice shortages in Ontario stores..LOL! Whaddya gonna eat when you get here huh?

As for the "point of failure" reference in Alberta, there is no such failure. They acknowledge the state of the situation and are remedying it - unlike Toronto - Duuuhhhh, we'll fix it when we have some more money - in other words, more like NEVER because the stupid assed politicians are too busy lining their pockets with 40% pay hikes while people starve in the streets - and what’s worse they don't seem to do any thing about the homeless problem which is rampant and a total embarrassment to Toronto. I 'm so ashamed of our city's homeless because it tells tourists that we are unable to "take care of business" LMFAO! I've said it before and I'll say it again Toronto sucks donkey balls! I can't wait to get the hell outta this crappy city!!!

Disclaimer: I have family in Alberta and British Columbia, and spent eight years on the West coast, two on the East (Montreal).

If you're going to live in Canada, I'd stick to the northern west coast (Basically anything north of Edmonton). The atmosphere just seems friendlier, it's less crowded, and Alberta's economy is currently booming. Head a bit further and you'll see real-estate prices drop, especially in areas that were former farm-land.

If you have an engineering or tech degree, look in to moving close to Peace River. The reason being: They set to have Alberta's first nuclear power plant. That means they'll need a lot of high-skilled labor, and that could very well be you.

As for general Canada compared to the States:
- We have socialized healthcare. I think it works better, some will argue with me.
- Quieter politics. Sure, we have heated debates, but it never gets to the type of "Barack Obama vs. Clinton" levels.
- Better education system (I've done both, this is personal experience).
- Different ISPs and IP laws. They help.
- Nicer cops. (Once again, this is my experience for the West coast. The east... Not so much).
