Depeche Mode... IMO. i know people will not agree and that is fine. go back to your little worlds. But I've been in love with martin gore for years... The Cure are a close 2nd. (Not big on their most recent stuff tho.)

What if all the world you think you know

Would you find yourself [or]
Find yourself afraid to see?..." -NIN

My opinon would probably be somewhere between Ulver and Fields of the Nephilim, for doing something powerfuly different. Ulver's 'Perdition City' is apsolutely amazing, as is 'Elisium' by FotN. and a word to all you Cradle Fans... They are riding on the back of the Black Metal trend, in a scene that is about obscurity and darkness, they peddled to the masses. i like to call it thesaurus metal. the lyrics are not deep. listen to Emperor's 'Anthems to the Welken at Dusk' and Burzum's amazing 'Hvist Lysset Tar Oss'. that is the black metal aesthetic. cold. grim. evil. no mosh. no fun. no trend. no core.
you can kinda see why Ulver broke out with the ambient trip hop-esque 'Metamorphosis', scenes can get you pigeonholed realy easily- espesialy in the area of extreme music.
please bear in mind that this is simply an OPINION and not an attack on anyone.

Without doubt, Paradise Lost was the band who invented the gothic style as we know it today. I grown with them and they will always be my reference in this metal genre. All the bands that came after them, got a piece of their style. Including my other reference, Crematory.

Heavy Metal is awesome!!!!
I total think heavy metal rox. Loadsa my mates like this new monkey stuff and they say heavy metal is just noise but I don't think its the lyrics that actually count in a song - I think its the people who get out there with the instruments they've learnt to play to show other people what they can do. Whatever this risk of brain damage is with head banging - w/e, its your choice to damage yourself and people are doing it far worse with drugs and alcohol.

well some of my favourite bands are Sisters of Mercy, The Mission(uk), fields of the nephilim, depeche mode, the cult, NIN, mr warner and other.
Now, best music genre? well i think its good to have a variety of hearings. Quality's an essential factor
