There's a claymation movie coming out in 3-D no less. Neil Gaimen wrote the story. Gonna be a fucking great movie. I shit you not.

That's the worst fucking idea ever. I'm sorry. JTHM belongs to Jhonen Vasquez and he only, and he has clearly expressed that he never wants to continue the series, let alone make a film out of it. I would be appalled if it was translated to a movie, actually. It's fine how it is.

Burton is the only real film maker that touches disturbing imagery without going full on slasher film.

Toy Killer is right about Burton having a style of his own. The uninformed (read: ignorant) person is quick to associate Burton with any remotely dark film, but he his method separates him from any artist or director. Fuck, everyone has their own style, except people who trace anime drawings.

Tim Burton is able to create a macabre setting without being outright gory and stupid, which is a lot to ask for these days. The movies he creates are beautiful. If he chooses to focus a little more on style than plot, I'm not going to damn him for being an artist.

He didn't direct it, but he played an intrical role in the creative design of... basically everything seen on screen. So it's not like it wasn't his or anything.

Although you can definitely see that Henry Selick had his influence, too, for example in the movie Monkeybone (which would have been a good movie if they'd have dropped all the f'ing perverted humor).

Yes, every filmmaker of note has a distinct style, that's the definition of auteur.

I personally find the aesthetic Burton imposes on his movies to be ridiculously gaudy, overwrought, and transparently manufactured, but if you feel that's beautiful, I suppose you're not the only one. Just compare the Gotham City of Burton's Batman to that of Nolan's Batman Begins-- the latter seems lived in, living, imbued with actual weight and substance, the former looks like a set piece.
As for the ability to fabricate a macabre atmosphere being a rare skill, that's just not true. Macabre doesn't necessarily equate to 'little color, lots of castles'.

JCC, if an ocean didn't separate us, I would totally let you be my young ward by day, sidekick by night.

I would climb the tallest mountain to stand by your side.

Assuming that you're incredibly tall.

When I'm successful and filthy rich I will totally come to America and we will show people together how to not be a loser.

And Nolan's was so nondescript I'm not even sure why they bothered calling it Gotham City instead of New York or any other place that happens to have skyscrapers.

Of course, it's unfair to compare apples and oranges. Nolan evidently wanted to take a more realistic approach while Burton wanted to create a vivid setting more appropriate for the comic book hero.

I didn't say it was rare; anyone can draw up a couple of tombstones or a dude with an ax. But as far as adding even an ounce of creativity or beauty to a macabre setting goes in the film industry, Burton is among the lonely few.
