Jay-Z sings about love and death. Maybe we should call him goth as well.

Maybe we should call Pagliacci goth, it's all about love and death AND most everyone in it has white make-up on their face and most wear all black.

It has nothing to do with lyrics, but genre, musical and otherwise. CoF is not part of the genre. They don't do tours to goth venues. They don't tour with gothic bands. You won't find them in the goth section of your local record shoppe. They aren't on a goth label. If you Google them or find them on MySpace or Last.FM, they don't even claim to be goth or list any goth artists as influences. They don't sound anything like the music played at the various goth nights around the world, which at the end of the day, is the real deciding factor.

So no, they aren't goth.

If you wonder why I post such angry replies it's because this is a personal pet peeve of mine.

When jo-bob fuck stick from east pig fuck arkansas sees a new CoF/Manson/My Chemical Romance video and decides thats what 'goth' is, and then go to their local mall to buy crap from Hot Topic and show up here talking trash, it bothers me.

It's like the white kids who hear Ice-Cube, then buy baggy jeans, turn their hat around, start speaking in broken english and using words like 'baby-daddy', 'werd', except on our scene.

I'm all for newbies showing up here and taking in the culture and supporting the scene, but don't come in here acting like you know whats what and post shite threads about 'My Chemical Romance' or start polls about which Crow film was the best.

It bugs me to think that these people take a whole genre, a lifestyle if you will, and condense it down to a mass marketed western media bought and sold commercially produced image designed to sell product, which is the exact opposite of who we are and what we are about.

So yeah, personal pet peeve.

Ahem, we know they aren't goth.. We don't give a shit, how pathetic is it to write a long post on how they're not goth and how you don't like it, when you can easily go somewhere else and do something more productive then that..
Besides that, it doesn't have to be goth to be on the boards.. electrosexual already explained that..
If you in your mind know what goth is to you, then be happy with that, but to say : "Ohhh CoF isn't goth because Hot Topic isn't Auugh! I hate them to no end, because its a peeve" is just stupid.

I liked Nymphetamine for a while a few years ago. But not listened to them/it for a long time now. I went off them in a big way.

Not a huge CoF fan, but it has nothing to do with whether or not they are 'goffic'. I just don't like them. :/

There are some bands with that gruff sound that I am coming to appreciate, but something about CoF just doesn't jive with me.

About what is goth rock and what isn't: Me personally, I can't say that -any- modern music is straight-up 'goth rock'. I think that all the true goth rock bands were back in the '70s and '80s [Siouxie, Bauhaus, etc.]. Regardless, I don't think you should base your opinion of music on whatever label the industry [or other people] have placed on it, but rather whether or not it hits a chord with you.

That being said, I was chided by my Beloved this morning because I confessed to liking some early Britney Spears songs.

Ignorance is bliss, so you get *this*.

Now.. if someone called Britney Spears music doom metal, wouldn't you correct them? If someone told you that a dog is a cat, wouldn't you correct them? ..on second thought, you probably wouldn't.

no, I would know in my mind that a cat is a cat, and a dog is a dog, but if they wish to think that way, then let it be... but I wouldn't be like:
someguy - "A cat is a dog"
me - "AUGH! no it's not! I HATE YOU!"

the point he was trying to get across is that they aren't goth, and he's angry for some reason... where we ALREADY know they're not goth...

I think if someone called Britney Spears 'doom metal' and they were serious, I would laugh my friggin' head off and then show them how very very wrong they are. XD

I would just laugh my head off and not show them, so they can make an dumbass out of themselves in front of more people until someone else explains it.

This reminds me of how last week I got kicked out of my summer school classroom for calling this guy an idiot because he thinks The Cure is the first emo band because Encyclopedia Britanica told him so. I also hate all the idiots who call Depeche mode emo these days.

last that I have checked, you were the confused one. Someone had stated that their lyrics were somewhat gothIC *keyword GOTHIC not GOTH* and you went off on a rant about how they aren't goth and you hate that.
Do you understand THAT?

ack, wormboy said goth, but what he means is, lyrics can be gothic in nature, but the band isn't goth *gothic rock*.
Besides the fact, ditch the labels, you either like something or you don't. It's like saying I don't like you because you're Irish *which isn't true*.. -_-

Guys, we're getting distracted here. Cradle of Filth are not Goth. Cradle of Filth do not need to be Goth to be discussed on these boards. However, Cradle of Filth are shit. If a band is shit, they should not be discussed on this board.

I hereby classify this thread;

FAIL.

No, there's a specific line that a lot of metal heads try to cross by claiming lyrics are gothic in a sad attempt to be "in the cool" with the goths.

Or at least that's what I'm getting. So lyrics are "gothic". Whatever, we all know they're jockying for some kind of special entitlement of some sort.

Gothic -
7. (often initial capital letter) noting or pertaining to a style of literature characterized by a gloomy setting, grotesque, mysterious, or violent events, and an atmosphere of degeneration and decay: 19th-century gothic novels.
Random House Dictionary

I say that wraps up their lyrics in a nutshell, don't you? You all described gothic rock shit. You do realize there's a genre called gothic metal right? That has nothing to do with gothic rock. You also realize that gothic can be an adjective for anything in the style mentioned above right?

Gothic art, whether literary, musical, architectural, or otherwise, has been around way before the 1980s smart ass. Johnny Slut, Siouxsie Sioux, and Andrew Eldritch do not own a copy right on the word goth. If I wrote a song with lyrics similar to the literary style I mentioned above, wouldn't that make it gothic? Wait, that's how the genre you're defending tooth and nail got it's title anyway.

While that may be true, plainly put, Cradle of Filth is NOT invited to the goth party. Just because it's dark and morbid doesn't mean it qualifies as being cool with trad goth aesthetics. Cradle of Filth is not Bauhaus.

Everyone is well aware of the snobbery that is goth rock, but needless to say, you wont be hearing CoF or Manson at a dark post punk club. Aint gonna happen.

The downside to that is that if Peter Murphy hears you call his music "goth", he's likely to kick your ass.

He's a wuss. I'd slap the taste out of his punk ass mouth. You're not invited to the goth party either. But that's okay. You're not missing anything.

It's just as dumb as those that REALLY REALLY want in the club.

Wasn't Peter Murphy on TRL with Gerard Way talking about goth?

Too late; already a card-carrying member.

In regards to Peter Murphy, I thought you were one of his fans. O.o Why the sudden hostility?

I may be a fan, but if he wanted to throw down, I'm not going to sit around all feelings hurt while he wailed on me.

Well, I imagine you wouldn't, but you fighting Peter Murphy wasn't really my poiint. [Though that -would- be pretty sweet to watch. ]

My point was that the bands classified as 'Gothic Rock'...especially the older ones...don't really like the label.
