Like you so nicely put it being goth has nothing to do with your interests or likes of fashion it really is just you liking a specific kind of music genre. And to me it has a lil to do with the fashion scene as well since i have always viewed Goth as really just a very large fashion statement which may or may not be a true view for me to look at it upon.

If you have (damn near mandatory) interest in music, go to the board and my new music thread.
Epitaphica: It's not a lifestyle. You don't honestly think that we only use goth soap/toothpaste, sleep in coffins, only drive hearses, and generally lead a stupid escapist lifestyle shrouded in overpriced Alchemy kitsch?

No no, I'm not saying that those things will take precidence over the music. First and formost is the music. But, collectively, these music fans have a way about them. That's all I'm saying. You cant simply emulate the look and lifestyle and completely forget about liking the music.

I'm not sure what canniness means, but yeah, that's pretty much right. Nevertheless, it doesn't prove that vampires are goth so much as that neither bats are goth, which is true; as Kontan said, goth is summed up in music, not in accessories.
In that spirit, fishnets then are not actually goth, although if we were to stretch the meaning a bit, they would have a better merit than vampires.

When did I say I believe such a thing? I'm merely saying that there does happen to be a trend among so called "goths" (goths who subscribe the label because they are avid fans of the aformentioned music) that includes image and a taste for the darker side of things. I'm not saying this is manditory. I'm also aware of goths (fans of the music) who don't subscribe to the label because they don't have the image. Likewise, there are goths who have nothing to do with the image and are merely goth because of the music.
All of this being said,t he kid in black and makeup in the corner blasting my chemical romance who completley looks confused when you ask him if he likes Sisters of Mercy subscribes to the image, and not the music, and is therefore not goth. See what I'm trying to say?
Its also 4am here, and my eloquence has lost me.

Because usually that train of thought chugs along every time someone puts goth and lifestyle together in a completely non-joking manner.
It also evokes nausea but that's just me. And maybe being back on birth control too. :P

By canniness I meant the awareness with which a lame atmosphere is evoked or risible elements are employed.
I was invoking the widely held idea that things can be rendered goth through association with goth rock, but if we discard that notion, you're correct. I believe I'd be quite satisfied if everyone rejected the foresaid premise, as the idea that EBM is goth is the consequence of its association with 'goth things' rather than the music itself.
You're probably right about fishnets, but only because more goth musicians have worn them than have dressed up like vampires, although the latter behavior is certainly not without precedent.

Well, hello and welcome. I'm sure you'll find many friends here and people who you can share plentifull interests and ideas with. Most of all try to have fun and don't let too many things bother you and you'll be happy. Promise. Btw, that is really great that you got to visit the Anne Rice sites, I'd love to visit them, very intriguing if I say so myself.

Oh yeah I loved going around seeing the Anne Rice Houses. Espically the house she used for her model fo Lestat's house the place just highly made me think that someone like Lestat would indeed live there.
I think thought I was a lil shocked to find that most of her houses were in fact up for sale. I guess it would make sense since she has up and moved off to San Deigo now. But at the same time its kind of sad to see those lovely old houses up for sale.
I guess just anyway you look at it I am fan of vampires, wither it really has anytying to do with being gothic or not.

Well, in most cases, yes there is a look that goes with the liking of Goth music. That being said, it's not a requirement or a guarentee. Someone could dress in blue jeans, a white shirt, some plain black shoes, and have short, completely normal hair, and yet be a goth if his iPod is nothing but things like Bauhaus, Siouxsie, The Cure, and SoM. Much like a person in normal jeans, a plain shirt, and short hair can still be punk if they share the general ideals and like punk bands.
The clothing is not a uniform, just a coincidence.
