That happens to a lot of people.
It all depends on your skin tone, I say.
I look RIDICULOUS with black hair, odd with blonde, but really good with any brown or red.

I have just dyed my hair black with the semi-pernament Manic Panic in raven. It looks really nice though it being my first time dying I used way too much and got it all over the place. It started falling out of my hair in big brown globs...ewww... but after I spent my 30 mins. cleaning up my bathroom before my mother killed me, It looked nice. I was just scared when i washed it and it looked like all the color was coming out.. X/

Just be aware if you are a natural blonde and dye your hair black, as it grows out the roots will make your part look wide and can give the illusion of thinning hair. I know this from experience unfortunately...I'm naturally a light brown and dyed black for 2 years before I got sick of it and used Colorfix to lighten it enough to put red over top.

Why don't you opt for a non-permanent dye and see if it suits you? Try L'oreal Shampooing Colorant Casting. My sister is a hairdresser and she makes some of her undecisive customers to try this.
