I can't get into Discharge at all. You can barely hear the words and there's really no music to it. It's just muted (for the good of anyone's ears) random repetitive riffs and grumbly lyrics. I mean, come on, Crass focuses almost purely on substance and yet they put some effort into the style.

Since I didn't see it mentioned, The Damned is pretty good. Otherwise looks like you've got a good list.

The Damned, just like The Misfits, is a well heard and well liked band, but they're a horrible choice for "essential punk"

Yes, Texas is The Reason. Obviously, I'm not good with names it seems.

You don't think anything off of even their first album is worth an essential list?

It's all right, in the end I appear to have a superior knowledge of 90's emo, which is more embarrassing.

All this talk about punk and no mention of X-Ray Spex, The Vibrators, The Rezillos, Vice Squad, Stiff Little Fingers, The Adolescents, Zounds, Conflict, 999?!

For shaaaaaame.

Especially with that reference to The Casualties and NOFX as essential.

The Casualties I simply love, though they're a lot better than NOFX. Stiff Little Fingers are a good idea, though I believe I need to get myself some more of them as well. She seems to like the Exploited, the Adicts, and Bad Religion. I think she would thuroughly enjoy the Vibrators, if you forgive the horrid double entendre.

I got it in a small punk shop for $17 (so for you, maybe eight and a half pounds) It sounds great on vinyl.

Good suggestions, the only reason I was choosing popular bands first is because their works are easier to get a hold of.

What's wrong with reggae?

I submit that Bob Marley had a set of beliefs closer to punk than any member of the sellout pop punk bands that infest this thread like lice.

On the other hand how many punks are stupid enough to deny themselves life saving blood transfusions on behalf of a religion founded on the basis that weed gets you closer to god?

They also believe that Ethiopa, "Zion", is the Paradise promised to them, so I won't be defending Rasta.

Bob Marley is unimpressive to me. Every person I've ever met high off their tits sounds just as wise as Marley.

I dunno, most of the people I meet who are high off their tits strike me as fucking stupid.

Which is why I hate drug culture with a passion.

That was my point.

Drugs and culture shouldn't be together in a sentence.

Fixd.

And quite a few.

Punk was influenced by sixties rock, people like Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, the Who, and so on. Not by a bunch of stoners in Jamaica with steel drums.

That's naive view on Reggae. Marijuana is such a small part of Reggae, and even Rasta for that matter, the important viewpoints of both don't even concern drugs.

That's such a naive view*

My internet crashed in the middle of me writing, damn the 5 minute editing limit.

A religion intended to empower the black race becomes a religion centered on smoking pot and sitting on the beach in the eyes of white America. I really can't boil it down further than that. If you really look at it, Reggae was the first example of music used as a device to politically educate and empower.

Removing weed from the picture

He is also seen as part of the Holy Trinity as the messiah promised in the Bible to return."
Even factoring in the good intentions, this is a stupid fuck religion. It's almost as bad as those people who worship a jewish zombie. O_O

I cannot for the life of me remember where I heard about this, but apparently reggae was one of the main genres played at the early punk clubs before the scene properly took off, and had quite a good amount of influence on it.
FUCK, I really want to know where I found that out now, it was something some band member said on some TV show, I want to say Patti Smith but my memory is being completely useless. Argh.

Anyway all the bands I'd mention have already been mentioned, except one: early Siouxsie and the Banshees. Not the most 'punk rock' sounding punk but bloody good stuff, pivotal to the early punk scene, not to mention it would provide some female vocals which appear to be desperately lacking in the mix so far. And I'll second X-Ray Spex and Vice Squad as well. Oh and the Slits! I'm also tempted to say the Devotchkas, though they're of a much later era than the others and not exactly 'essential'.
