| Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Prog Rock/Metal?
I speak, of course, of the oldies such as ELP and Yes all the way through Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, and Opeth. This has always been my favorite genre, and I wanted to see if any of you liked them as well. Some songs currently on my mind are Siberian Khatru by Yes, Go the Way You Go by Spock's Beard, and of course, The Widow by The Mars Volta.
So, what do you guys think of those songs, and the genre in general?
EDIT: Links removed because of noobness.

Yes is ok, but they can put me to sleep if I'm already a little tired.
Dream Theater I just hate.
Opeth is pretty awesome.
The Mars Volta I can't stand.

Opeth is pretty wicked.
Mars Volta, and Dream Theater not so much. I guess we agree on these bands POS.

I'm guessing it's the singers that annoy you? Have you listened to Porcupine Tree? Anyway, seriously check out Spock's Beard. They're probably the most underappreciated band of all time, no joke. Neal Morse can sing anything.

It's partly the singers, the only band on the list with a decent singer is Opeth. I think it's mostly, and I don't know how to put it exactly... A lack of emotion I guess, especially in the case of Dream Theater. Most of their stuff just seems to be technical playing for the sake of technical playing, almost like Malmsteen. They're great musicians and all, they just lack feeling.

Okay, I thought so. So, did you check out SB? I don't think anyone can describe him as emotionless.

Porcupine Tree isn't that great.
I do like some prog, though. What about Pink Floyd?

The only progressive metal groups I'm really into are Opeth and Gojira. Ihsahn's solo material has plenty of progressive influences as well. Though I haven't heard much Pink Floyd I absolutely love "Set the controls for the heart of the sun" from the A Saucerful of Secrets album

2112 is an amazing song!!!.
My favourite track off `Moving Pictures` is `Tom Sawyer` (one of my favourite songs ever) . Sumerian, which is your favourite Rush Live album ?

Gotta love Rush. 2112 Overture/Syrinx is probably the best metal overture EVER. Animals is quite awesome.
Any Crimson fans out there?

It would have to be 'Exit Stage Left', because its the album that got me into the rush in the first place. I'd never heard adventurous rock like this, until I heard this album. The setlist is just flawless, and all the songs on this album are way better than the studio versions.

Sumerian,
It was the videos off that album (Tom Sawyer, Closer To The heart) that used to be played on `VH-1 Classic Rock` and `The Friday Rock Show` (a show that is sadly missed on TV, as is Headbangers Ball when Vanessa Warwick presented it) that got me into Rush too, and inspired me to go out and buy `Exit Stage Left` !!!.
`The Whole World Is A Stage` (The first Rush live album released in 1976) is really cool too !!!.

I enjoy playing "Demon of the Fall" on guitar. It really brings a smile to my face.
I also enjoy "power metal" sorts like Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, or Eternal Tears of Sorrow. (I know many may classify the latter as melodic death metal, but personally I would categorize them more along the lines of power metal)
On the other end of the spectrum, I suppose...are bands like Isis or Red Sparowes. Those two I could listen to all day every day and never get tired.
But - that's just my own opinion.

Isis and Red Sparowes are awesome, but they're Post-Metal rather than Progressive Metal.

I would agree. I know they aren't Progressive Metal, which is why I made mention of "the other end of the spectrum". I just felt the urge to mention them.
Perhaps I should take medication for my urges?

I'm going to be all cliché and say their original 1969 lineup and Court of the Crimson King.

Yes and Bill Bruford's U.K., I have seen them both in concert.
Thirty Years Gone is epic.
