That's as far as the comparison goes. No matter how you word it, it's still a comparison of a law to a company policy. One is there to protect us (the people). The other is there to protect them (the companies).

Exactly what damage are you talking about? Laws like that would encourage people to drink where they will be staying and learning to drink responsibly instead of illegally drinking in sketchy bars that don't card or going out at parties, both of which require some sort of ride home and most people just chose to drive their intoxicated asses home.

If the drinking age lowered then people start to drink while they are still at home, not while they are away at school (yes I know that not everyone goes to a university but a very large chuck of the population does) where the atmosphere tends to encourage binge drinking coupled with other irresponsible actions.

I feel that lowering the drinking age would just increase problems, because it would make it easier for more people to drink.

The damage I'm talking about is mostly damage caused by people who drive drunk, which is considerable in that age range.

I understand your position and get where you are coming from, I just respectfully disagree with you and think that those who would not respect a zero tolerance policy are the same people who do not respect the legal drinking age.

That's probably true, mm.

It doesn't matter to me. I waited until I was 21. People are going to continue to drink whether it's legal or not.

I feel for consistency sake, the drinking age in America should be 18, or the age of majority should be raised to 20 or 21. Here in Japan, it's 20 for everything (voting, smoking, drinking), and it makes sense.

Also, an arguably more effective way to cut down on those DUI incidents would be to develop and promote transportation alternatives. I'll bet that's something that never crosses anyone's mind at MADD while they're pushing their byzantine restrictions on alcohol.
