I liked McCain, 8 years ago that is. Back when he actually WAS a maverick. Anybody remember the straight-talking, Pro-Choice McCain who refused to engage in negative ads? He was pretty cool. Then he got the pants beat off him by 'Dubya' (and we all know how that turned out).
Now we've got this new McCain. He's been pandering to the religious right and toeing the republican party line like it's a tightrope (Which I hope is only because he thinks it's the only way he can get the nomination). And now, that he's eight years closer to death, he's nominated a completely unqualified VP from freaking ALASKA just because she's got a vagina.
Unqualified or not, I'm voting for Obama. I hate to say it but I just don't trust the new McCain.
All things considered; McCain vs. Obama is still better than Bush vs. Gore or Bush vs. Kerry.

The best commentary to date was on the Daily Show the first night of the GOP convention. I have it on disc, I'm turning it into an AVI and going to post it online soon.
Its really amazing - all the top republicans standing up there claiming America is going down the tubes and saying America needs change, yet they are the very ones who are causing the problems - they are the ones who are in control, they are the ones who supported bush as well as sponsored the very bills which became law which they now are attacking.
It would be funny if the situation wasn't so dire.

To be fair it's actually the democrats (I am neither a democrat or republican) who have had the majority in the house of representatives since the last election and an equal number of seats in the senate, and overall have majority leadership. A couple of weeks ago I heard someone say on tv that democracy is dead when people believe that one president over another will save this or that ideal or set of problems you believe in. Well, in a nutshell the current cult of pres elections is looking like monarchies.
The gist of the whole thing is that democracy is a ground up and not a top down form of govt. If you want things fixed you start local and the top will work it's way out.
It's a shame when the vp pick for the reps is better than the actual candidate, and the pick for the dems seems a lot like Nicholas Carpathian from the Left Behind series of books (some lady on the radio called in and was espousing this, I thought it was hilarious).

Obama himself will not change a thing. Obama being elected will reflect the general mood of the times, though, and that's important. If Obama is elected over McCain, things will be better. Just not of Obama's doing.

i watched obama's acceptance speech and frankly he seemed to be spouting a lot of rainbows and sunshine everyone wants to here
i just cant believe people buy into it, i don't think mccains going to do great things, but who would expect him to, but obama is actually swaying people buy telling them he'll solve...a WHOLE LOT, it was rediculous what he was saying, and he plans on doing it while lowering taxes, serious!! solve everyone US problem with less money to work with, are you kidding me
nothing will change either way, the gov will still be too powerful and push us around, and we have to suck it up, and if we never turned on the TV we wouldnt know the presidents ever changed

I don't trust representative politics and even I know better than what you just said.
Do you even know his policies? It is perfectly plausible for Obama to improve America's policies while reducing taxes to middle and lower income families.
Please tell me you didn't derive all your opinion on Obama on a shallow appearance of logic.
And please tell me you don't believe McCain is better, because as much rhetoric as Obama says, at least it's merely hyperbolic. McCain's is downright hypocritical.

Whats real funny is the women who support McCain because of Palin. I mean, Palin is anti-abortion, anti-stem cell research, and anti-gay marriage.
She is pretty much against the main issues most women support. She is against having the right for a woman to choose, which I would think most women would like to have.
She also passed legislation to force r@pe victims in Alaska to have to PAY for their r@pe kit, else the police WON'T test a women.
That right there speaks volumes on how she views women. If women support her for being a woman, they will end up screwing themselves.

I'm not voting, I don't want my fingerprints on the trainwreck. I am, however, going to "do something". I want to start distributing anarchist literature and maybe some communist literature. I'm voting for Obama because of, admittedly, broad and idealogical issues rather than specific policy points. I don't agree with him about everything. But it will say a lot to the rest of the world whether we elect the young, biracial progressive or the old, militaristic white guy (and his gun-toting Girl Friday). I'm voting for Obama because I think it's less likely he'll turn the Middle East into a giant fucking orgy of death (beyond what it already is, of course).
In regards to earlier comments by CptSternn: Palin is a brainless twat, but she's no worse on women's issues than anybody. Because women, strangely enough, have the ability to have differing opinions on things like abortion, stem cell research and gay marriage (so do gay people, by the way). They may be hypocritical, dimwitted or archaic opinions, true, but they're hardly the province of one sex more than another.

Ok now this I don't like, Obama is refusing to delay the presidential debate to work on the current economic problems. I know it's almost November, but if something isn't done fast there will barely be a country left to be president of. If this doesn't get taken care of this has the potential to be far worse than the great depression, the great depression was a simple stock market crash. Frankly I can't understand why he wouldn't take this opportunity to show the country what he can do, I certainly wouldn't mind if candidates demonstrated what they would do rather than simply talk about it.
