*martial arts nerd* Boku = wood, Ken = sword, To = sword. So basically it is saying the same thing two different ways. Both are Japanese. I think it is a preference thing. The wooden sword is a weapon, if you get one treat it with respect and be careful. Miyamoto Musashi is (in)famous for the number of people he killed with a wooden sword. Remember, steel cleaves through bone, wood "just" crushes it.

Bokken can be quite beautiful in their own right. I am saving up for a hand-carved hickory bokken from kingfisher wood works. Sei Do Kai has some gorgeous laminate pieces. It really depends on your personal aesthetics. Like anything else in life, the good stuff tends to cost a little more.

Good luck with your aikido training!

The lovely little bit of steel serving as my avatar will be mounted up proper within a month or two.

If you actually intend on doing anything with the blade, stay away from stainless steel. To each his own, but my instinct is a sword cane is trying to do two things poorly. If you insist on getting a sword cane, you should check to see if they are using a high carbon steel. If they don't know or do not answer, hobble away as best you can without having a poorly built sword cane to lean on.

Not really intending to do anything with it,but thanks for the advice.

The price tag actually strikes me as kind of high,it would be more for show.

(Besides I have a full plate with the two S&W's on my list as of right now, plus I need to find a good skull pic to send to the Engraver for the "Death's Right Hand" finishing touch on the side plates)

Feel free to post a pic of the finished product.

"Poor" swords start at several hundred USD. "OK" ones generally begin at around 1,000. Anything less than $200 is not a reliable weapon, it is a decoration and needs to be treated as such.

If you did intend to cut anything, or wave about in a dramatic manner, please consider saving up. Anything less than a few hundred dollars cannot have been put together in a safe manner with decent quality control. A fragile blade can snap, or poorly built one slip out of its mountings. It doesn't take much to turn a cheap blade into a snapped-off projectile. I've seen far too many horror stories. Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmRUaxq-QhU. Hillarious, right?

I'll be sure to put a few images of my project once it is completed.

Best Regards

I've seen that one before I have the same set of "Kill-tana's" (Although I got a deal on them $18.00 for all three plus the stand, local flea markets are pretty cool sometimes, not bad for home decor)

It's not Hilarious but it does kind of make you chuckle (Because well the guy should have known better)

Man, canes are cool. I want one, but unfortunately I don't really have a limp. Maybe I'll just carry one around as a fashion statement, no one will question it because I'm a faggy goth.

I like swords.
But it's somewhat senseless to buy one only for decoration purpose.
Sdaly, I didn't encounter with any place in which I could learn how to use any kind of weapon. Except for the Japanese ones, but it's only since our Aikido teacher decided than it's important enough to teach us this.

Hi Noirette,

Yes, I've been studying for a little over a year now with some really excellent people on the East Coast, US. It involves mostly sword work, with a good deal of aikijutsu.

I do love the Japanese swords, but lately I've been getting an appreciation for western types. I saw an excellent video of some longsword fencing, and the movements weren't all that different from some of the things I had seen. Someday, I'm hoping to have a piece from every culture. Until then, I'm just trying to get the best I can find for the art I'm studying.

...

Ah, the trench knife. Ever since reading the Zombie Survival Guide I've wondered what one actually looked like. Thats an interesting fellow. For now I think I'll stick with http://www.crkt.com/hissfolder.html.

Cheers

Hi Jonathan

I have noticed some similarities between the techniques found in both the Japanese styles (using Katana etc) & the old German schools of swordsmanship, not just with the langeswert* but also with the langesmesser** & kriegsmesser***. Personally I think this comes down to the fact that there's only so many ways you can wield such weapons.

* Germanic longsword
** Germanic falchion-like sword
*** Germanic two handed sword with a curved blade similar to a katana

Those are damn fine working weapons (Not bad to look at either)

Although I favor the Knuckle Duster and Ka-Bar,one of those would look nice in my collection (I'm also trying to find a Good reproduction of the Marine Raider Bowie)

Update on the handguns.

I've had the Model 617 ordered and will put the first down payment on it soon.

I've picked out a good holster for it (Uncle Mikes Nylon Hip Holster) and will order the Checkered Grips for it in a few days.

The only thing left is to find a good Skull pic (trying to find one of a skull with an American steel pot helmet instead of the first idea) and an engraver that does good work at a fair price.
