How do I get my cousin to understand?

I am currently a role model for my cousin. She is a scene queen. I wish to help her migrate out of this idiocy, but she doesn't seem to understand that Hot Topic isn't the main source of my subcoultureness.

Well, at this point in time she's just making an ass out of herself. Now, if you get her to understand, then she'll just be a little copy of you.
First one, you win she loses.

Ah, I see. So I should teach her to find her own path, but at the same time not being an ass?

I would tell her to stop trying to springboard off me, and shop wherever she wants and not just Hot Topic, but it sounds like something she's kinda going to have to grow out of.

Hmm, I understand what your saying. It probably is something she'll out grow out of. I did the same thing when I was her age (12) too.

I was like that until about a year and a half ago, but I wasn't copying any one person in particular.

You're going to teach her to follow her own path by steering her away from things she likes?

I say just don't worry about it. Understanding will come to her through experience.

She'll grow out of it. Younger relatives often look up to and try to emulate their older relatives. There's nothing you can really do to "correct" her without making yourself look like an ass. She'll have to learn from her own mistakes.

It's not even a mistake!

What the hell is wrong with you guys!?
So she likes dressing "scene" or whatever--that doesn't make her an ass, and it doesn't make her wrong.

I agree with Ophelia. It's not a mistake. Clothes are clothes, and if she likes them there's nothing wrong with her wearing them. The clothes don't make the person. Leave that to the personality.

Tell her to do what she pleases, she'll probably move on to something else after a while anyway.
