First of all, I don't actually think either of them suck. I just don't like Tom Waits. His music is good, but I hate it.
As for Bob Dylan...he's a fucking popstar. He's no better than Katy Perry. It's unoriginal, pre-written, badly sung crap that everyone thinks is fucking gospel music.
He even changed his name TO MAKE MORE MONEY.
Second of all, I really have no care at all as to whether or not some kid on the internet thinks I listen to good music.

Bob Dylan broke the contemporary conventions of pop music. He is far from a popstar unless you compare him to the people who came after him and were influenced by him.

Yeah, he is, he could write songs.

Actually, only a few of his albums were gospel music.

No, he didn't. He changed it when he was on the Dinkytown folk circuit; there's not much money to be made in pubs and clubs, bubs.

Honestly, i never cared for Dylan. He just wasn't my cup of tea, ya know? Besides, the only people i knew in teh real w0rld that loved him were stoners. "Dude, Dylan is fucking awesome! You just don't get it if you don't like him". Yeah. about the same way i didn't get the two hour philosophical rant about the relativity of cheetos and cheese puffs that eventually ended with "They're both fucking awesome".
Not that any of you guys are like that. lol
Just couldn't get into the monotony. Same with Neil Young. No idea who Katy Perry is and i've never listened to Tom Waits. What does that say about my musical tastes? lol
Kambili, let me guess, your SO is Apathy's Child?

There's not much monotony to Dylan, he's pretty diverse. Usually when people don't like Bob Dylan, if you ask them for a song of his, it's
"Blowin' in the Wind."
"OK, what's another?"
"Uh... Blowin' in the Wind."

Seriously, how is it possible to dislike Tom Waits?! Dylan I can understand more easily (between the heavy harmonica, entire albums of poor quality and questionable singing ability), but Tom of the sexy voice and utterly consistent talent? I just can't understand some people. I mean, I know everyone's entitled to their opinion and all, but there are always some which leave me open-mouthed and speechless.

Well, that makes sense - I AM one of these stoners you speak of.
And yes, it's Apathy's Child.

You mean his singing style is more diverse than his famous song "Candle in the Wind"?
i'll man-up and admit that i am basing my dislike on only a handful of songs i've heard hear and there. None that would require me to take a mental note so that one day i can be quizzed about it. lol
And it's not truly a dislike. More like...not my thing. i'll never say he sucked. i understand his importance in music. Again...i care not for his style of music.

That's fair. But if you just don't like the sound of folk, I would highly recommend trying Highway 61. You might not like it, but if you do I'll get to feel like a Jehova's Witness for a day.

Rainy Day Women #12 and 35 is better.
It's Dylan's best song from Dylan's best album.

Last night i was convinced to listen to a k-pop band called boa...or BoA? That person is now on a waiting list to be flogged.

Actually, I agree about Blonde on Blonde being the best album, but I think Highway 61 is more accessible for someone who hasn't heard much Dylan. Blonde on Blonde starts weird and gets weirder!
Tekajo: I am well pleased.

Kambili:
Wasn't sure if you intended on me listening to the entire album Highway 61 Revisited or the song itself. i've heard most of the songs on the album already. The one that i rather liked that i never heard before was "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry". The song Highway 61 Revisted itself was damn good. That's the kind of stuff i like when it's not metal.
JCC:
Listened to "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"...not bad. Still not my cup of tea. Did like "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" though.
In regards to Tom Waits...i definitely was not prepared for that. Listened to "Singapore" first...just a minor mindfuck that was. Then "Jockey full of Bourbon". Interesting. Needs further digesting. All in all not bad.

You, young man, need to watch No Direction Home and check out the live performances of the young Bob Dylan before allowing such outrageous assertions to be made in your presence. Maybe his vocal range wasn't anything special, but his control was.
If you've already seen some good back-in-the-day performances and continue to hold this belief, I don't know what to tell you.

I was kidding. Songs like I Want You let him down, but he was a perfectly fine singer on a lot of his songs.

I once saw an interview with Bob Dylan where he said "I'm as good a singer as anyone else. I sound awful, but I can hit all the right notes."

I didn't think he was all that great a singer, until watching some live performances from the days back in which he actually gave a shit. Some are eerily good, and now and again his voice actually sounds beautiful. Most of the albums don't really show how well he can actually sing, for some reason.
