I am ressurecting this thread because I want to press for a meetup. I'd like to talk face to face with a few people from here.

I live in rural Japan, but I might be willing to come up to Osaka if a Gnetter ever happened to be in the area (unlikely).

I've considered living in Japan now and then but I've heard the natives can be kind of racist and that caucasians are not very welcome.
Is this true? How do things go for you over there?

well EtS, it depends what part of Japan it is. My girlfriend lived in Japan for about a year because of her dad's work, I can ask her about it if you want. I never really asked her about it.

Err.. you seem to have looked over my post but I went ahead and asked her anyways. She used to live in 東灘区 (Higashinada-ku). Said the older generation is the one that tends to be more on the rascist side, but the younger kids tend to be cool with whitey, xD

The racism (if you can call it that) I've encountered here is directed mostly towards the Chinese. Caucasians are generally well liked, I though I have heard of people having bad experiences with those that are "anti-gaijin," that have a disdain for foreigners in general. I think it does depend on which prefecture you're in.
What kind of gets under my skin sometimes is that I get just enough unsolicited attention as to be perpetually reminded that I'm an outsider. Things like curious stares and the odd schoolkid on the street shouting "hello!" at me.

Anti- outsider ?
It happened here, too, along with xenophobia.

Yes. Xenophobia, anti-outsider, anti-immigrant, it's all the same thing.
In the US it's really strong against Mexicans, in Europe it's really strong against Turks and Northern Africans.

I find it disturbing that nobody outright told Uni she doesnt stand a hope in hells chance of anyone meeting her. We have plenty of mental hospitals where I live if I want to meet nutters.

I think we've been down that road enough times already.
