Vests
Ive been wanting to buy a good old-fashioned velvet vest but im not sure if i can make it work with a scruffy, semi-industial style. Is it possible to incorporate it with a more more modern style and make it look good? I would be grateful of your opinion.

I stay away from vests, even for formal wear. I think they just look silly.
I do have a wicked sick black leather vest with a ribcage painted on the front though.

I was thinking something like this in black or navy velvet. Unfortunately my camera cable is broken but i can describe what i usually wear. I wear a long, plain black trench coat, black combat boots with 3 buckles up the legs, a long-sleeved formal shirt and loose jeans or trousers.

I thought it would look kind of odd. Formal and informal can clash horribly.

Not really.
Last time I went out I wore my tailcoat, with the silver buttons I put on it, with my black vest just like that, also with silver buttons, and silver buckles on the side, and my bondage pants and high multi buckle boots, fishnet gloves, and tux shirt with spider cufflinks.

That vest is cool. Hmmm maybe slash the front a little.... put some type of fabric underneath the slashes..like spiderweb print or fishnet...then safety pin the slashes so the fabric print shows under it, hmm change out the buttons, slash the sides..add buckles, or pins...
lots of things could be done to it to make it more industrial.

I approve of vests in all situations, regardless of dress.

A mix of formal an informal when done right can be pretty cool. A vest is definitely a good way of doing it. A formal jacket will also work really well. We have a range of vests at GothCloth including a velvet one

49 pounds for Tripps? You're out of your mind... They sell those at the mall for 40 USD.
You do have a nice variety though, I'll give you that.

Mmmm yeah but you have to consider that we don't all live in the US
Add on the various taxes, duties and shipping charges to get things to the UK and that's a very good price.
Thanks on the variety. We're just starting out but getting in as much stock as we can.

Those wouldn't cost you 49 pounds from an American website, even with shipping...

OK. Say you could order them from the US for $40. I've had a look and the best I could see was $59 but lets go with $40 anyway.
At the current exchange rate of .69253 thats £27.70. Great.
Then you add 12% US duty which is £3.32
Then you add 15% UK tax. You are sometimes taxed on the shipping charge as well as the item but lets say you're not. That's £4.16
Ok. We're now at £35.18. And that's on a good day and we still need to pay for shipping.
On the site I looked at shipping to the UK was $39 which is £27.
So that's £62.18 which isn't quite so great.
I'm also ignoring the foreign currency charge of 2.75% that a credit card company will charge on top of everything else.
Also, buying from the US will take longer to ship than buying from the UK. There's more hassle to return it if it's the wrong size and very improtantly you're not covered by EU distance selling regulations which give you rights on returning items.

I would go with the navy velvet. Being a person who wears vests, a black vest does nothing to enhance a black outfit, unless you wear white shirts.

ah, but a black vest over a black shirt can give you a better visual line, so to speak. Instead of it just being the line of the shirt by your sides, you have something sightly more fitted to give it a better shape.

The waistcoat looks good with a long sleive shirt.
I saw a pic of Malice wearing such a thing and it looks really good!
As with anything, if you are tastefull about it, it can look good.
I had eyed the rack of vests at the thrift store and wondered what it would be like, but now I am sure it would look good. m, if done properly ofcorse.
