Moving for a significant other is almost always a bad idea. Trust me, I almost did it once, and I'm SO goddamn happy I was smart enough not to.

Columbia's a damn good school though.

If it is some backwater town, sure, but this is New York, The Big Apple.
The incidental experiences alone would make up for any lost love if his relationship dries up.

Yeah but Jillian doesn't want to go to NYC.

If I had a girl in NYC who wanted me to move in with her I'd be up there in a heartbeat because I want to move to NYC.

Transferring to Columbia University would be impressive, and would probably help me if I become a college professor.
Des, isn't Columbia in NYC?
edit: Nevermind dude, i see what you're saying.

i almost did it once. At the last minute it all fell through. i've no regrets about it. i wasn't particularly that crazy about the girl but i had just got back from Tulsa and being back here seemed...dull. i was looking for another adventure and Virginia looked like it could have been it.

i wouldn't do it now should a similar opportunity like that arose. Only if there were some major incentives involved. Such as...going to Columbia University.

If it is what you want, and you have nothing to lose and plenty to gain, then do it. If you still have the option of coming back if it all goes pear shaped, then even better. Life is too short to make decisions based on other peoples experiences in a situation like this, because everyone is different.

My boyfriend will probably be following me to London next year. Then again, it's London, and regardless of me existing or not he'd have made his way there eventually anyway.

Moving somewhere for someone you aren't already very firmly attached to, however, doesn't seem like a great idea. That's just assuming the 'somewhere' isn't any better than where you already are. If 'somewhere' is in fact an awesome opportunity outside of possible sexual relations, then by all means go for it.

So basically this thread should be retitled "Would you move for College".

Where my answer changes to "Of Course".

Jillian's family has got to be rich as hell if he's considering up and going to a major Ivy-league private school just for a girl (or he's just not thinking about it I suppose).

I'm currently applying to gradschool and Columbia is one of the schools on my list. As much as I'd love to go there, I've got to say I'm apprehensive about the cost. Even IF I get in I think I'd be landing myself somewhere between $60,000 and $80,000 in debt. While I'm sure a graduate degree from Columbia is worth it, I certainly enjoy being completely debt-free at the moment.

Hell those guys made me pay a hundred bucks just to look at my application.

Not really, but I'm pretty sure I can get a good scholarship. If not, I'm ok with NYU.
Columbia's cool, but this choice is not about a better school.

By the way, if there was any confusion, the "not really" was a nod.
It's not "not really; I have put thought into it"
It's "yeah, I'm not really putting any serious thought to it"

I would always advise moving out of Texas. If for nothing else than leaving Texas.

It might be kinds cool to bump into you at school in the fall. I'm assuming you're thinking about switching to their undergrad program?

I'm pretty sure NYU costs more than Columbia, and, despite the latter being technically an Ivy, is just as likely to give you cash.

From what I've heard NYU would be more likely to give me a T.A. position.

Not that I want to be an academic, but it would really offset the cost.

Bart: I was so bored I cut the ponytail off the guy sitting in front of us. (Holds up clump of ponytail hair to the back of his head) Look at me! I'm a grad student! I'm 30 years old and I made $600.00 last year!

Marge: Bart! Don't make fun of grad students- they just made a horrible life choice.

No, I wouldn't. I almost made the mistake of marrying someone in the military and moving down to St. Louis.

It wasn't really worth it for me,sure I was able to check out how life was in Southern Cali, but due to the situation I found myself in,I left while my sanity was still somewhat in tact(After selling my $10,000.00 ATV "Beast Version2.0" and half of my firearms to foot the bill for our tickets) I had to leave before I snapped and hurt someone. (Plus the gun laws in California really got to me)

I'd move for the girl/guy, but I'd also make sure there are other reasons for going where ever it is that I'd be going. I really want to body pierce professionally, and both the Denver and DC metro areas have numerous piercing shops.
You could always move down to Hampton Roads, all of the sailors coming in and out of the area has led to a large number of tattoo and piercing studios, which haven't really been hit by the economic crunch because military personnel makes up such a large segment of their business, and down here is a hell of a lot more affordable than LoCo.

We are really hoping that Jake is able to get a job in the area, he is looking at possible positions at private schools (as he has not taken the education courses which VA public schools require) and it looks like a few in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Williamsburg may have openings in history at the end of this school year.

Pretty much what most people have said - I would allow a girl to be the catalyst, but not the sole draw toward a particular place.

Columbia is a shit-hot university with some awesome classes and the worst that could happen is you have to mend your broken heart by fucking some other hot college girl.
