I really wouldn't care if they went through my computer files. I got rid of ALL the evidence.

The only way to exterminate all of the information on a hard drive is by melting it with thermite. The only way to keep your information safe is by keeping it on a hard drive that is separate from any system that is connected to the Internet.

Sucks for all you Britfags.
Also, can the American police view my porn folder? At all? Just wondering. It's not like I have freaky illegal porn I obtained from various image boards including but not limited to 4chan, 7chan, desuchan, danbuuro, Rule 34, etc.
Nope. My folders hold nothing. Not at all. Not even the ones labeled "Don'ttouch", "LOLis", and "I'mgoingtohell".
(To the police: I am joking.)
(To everyone else: I'm serious, can they view the folders?)

The upcoming government database of all phone calls, texts, emails and websites visited is being outsourced to a private company. I haven't been this disgusted with my country for several weeks now.

Isn't Zeitgeist about the US? If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's a load of ill-supported crap and unfounded conjecture, shot through with conspiracy theories in their most hysterical form.

No. This is going on in the UK. They've got ever square foot under surveillance.

And yes, I like how despanan put it. "Don't watch Zeitgeist unless you hate your brain and want it to run away."

Not really. My whole computer crashed beyond repair a few weeks ago. I even took it to a highly recommended specialist and he said no one would be able to bring it back.

And then he was like "here, I'll throw those hard drives away for you, since you won't be needing them".

Use TrueCrypt if you guys are paranoid. Even offers plausible deniability. Fun for the whole geeky family.
Ofcourse, this would do squat on a compromised system but that's another story.

If it means snooping on the average person for the sake of swinging their power and weight, then I question this plan.
But, of it means catching padophiles, conartists, terorists, then I say
"move forward with this plan with all the power the cops can muster".
If they can catch some nasty shithead scoping kids out or someone trying to rip other people off then great.
Get used to it. It won't be the first time the common man/women's privacy has been violated in the sake of national security and wellness.

First, you can't support the government violating the rights of one citizen and not another. Cops who would use this sort of power to do good will be flanked and surpassed by those who use it to harm society.
Look at the current laws surrounding arrests on airplanes. How many terrorists have been arrested using the new airplane laws since they were introduced in the patriot act? 0. How many average people have been arrested on frivolous charges? HUNDREDS.

Also, lets not forget the words of Thomas Jefferson...
The man who would choose security over freedom deserves neither.

This article makes me furious. They should not be able to infringe upon our civil rights like this. They should have a REASON to search hard drives in the first place. They're just wasting valuable time and resources examining everyone's hard drive. I can only hope the US government remains SANE enough to require a permit for all searches and hacking.
